James Shumate and Jane Shumate Conway of Faquier County Va.

I come into this family with my Gx2 grandfather, Peter Conway Shumate, who left his family to serve in the Civil War, and ended up living the rest of his short life in Greene County, Alabama. It was in the very beginning of my long love-affair with genealogical research that I finally found his parents, in a velum-paged, hand-typed booklet I just happened to find on the shelf at the main (huge) LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City. It was one of the most exciting moments for me. I didn’t realize at the time that there might need to be documents to verify the relationships, and that there would be controversy as the years went on, questioning the veracity of this line. Oddly, in spite of chastisement that came my way from Col. Riley, who has written what is considered the definitive book about the Virginia Shumates (and associated Conways), I am still convinced that my info is solid.
After piecing together the numbers and a narrative pieced together out of several county histories (which are not necessarily famous for their accuracy) built from the memories of people living anywhere between 1881 and 1903, I have found enough circumstantial evidence to satisfy me that MY line came out of Fauquier County, Virginia in about 1826, heading for Kentucky with their tiny children in tow, and that they stayed there for some years before removing to Ohio, and then to Missouri. As I have done this incarnation of my research, collecting everything for these notes, I am comfortable with my narrative.
If you wish to use the information I have gathered here, please do me the courtesy of citing me, by name and by address, so that people with questions can find me, correct to me, add to the conversation. Do not just copy and paste, please.

The Missouri Shumates:
Starting in Virginia, Fauquier County
The little book I found in SLC identified James H Shumate as the son of Rosanna Graham and George Shumate, also spelled Summitt. I’m not sure where that spelling comes from. We’re talking about deep south accents and ancient deep south wilderness limited literacy. Even on a legal document, spelling is often the clerk’s call, as the Concerned Parties are often unable to sign their own names. And if they could, there’s no guarantee they’ll have learned how that name is actually spelled; someone sloppy or self-taught could spell his own name according to phonetics. A clerk may do the same thing, spelling a name as he hears the client speak it.
But there were problems with that parentage. George leaves his land to three of his sons, writing as though he expects them to stay in Kentucky and develop the land. But James is in Knox County Iowa no later than 1830. And as it turns out, the George named in the Saline County history as father of James H. Shumate is much more likely to have been the son of Thomas Shumate and his unknown wife, as I will demonstrate below.
To begin with, we have Jean de la Chaumette, who came to Virginia very early in our history; his life is covered in some depth in Robert S. Riley’s History of the Shumate Family, which is a very well documented piece of work, and is the basis for all information I include here about the Virginia family and roots. He had a bunch of kids, among them Daniel Shumate, who is designated as Daniel (I), first by Von Stauffenberg, who wrote an earlier, not as carefully documented, tome about this family. Riley’s book is almost a commentary on Von Stauffenberg, with loads of documents included in the last 600 or so pages of the book. The numbers after Shumate names do not indicate patrimony – not Junior or Senior. They are more almost geological – finally simply indicate the order in which these people are discovered, over a number of different family lines.
Daniel (I) is the son of Jean (pronounced John, with a sort of soft “J”) who is the ancestor from whom both James H Shumate and Jane Shumate Conway Shumate descend. He’s my double 6X great grandfather. He was listed in Family Search by several people, almost all of whom paired him with his second wife, attributing the children to her. His first wife, according to both Von Stauffenberg and Riley, was Elizabeth Taliaferro. Riley gives her more weight, after his extensive research:
From History of the Shumate Family (HSF) pg 139:
Here, the writer would like to state his agreement with T.F. Von S, considering the skimpy documentation presented above, that Daniel Shumate (I) probably did marry first Elizabeth Taliaferro circa 1736 and that she had died sometime prior to 1 February 1757 when he married second Mary Elizabeth Hoffman in Frederick County, MD. By analyzing who could have been the children of Daniel and Elizabeth Shumate and their approximate years of birth, the writer has arrived at some basic conclusions differing with those presented by von S. Foremost among these differences is the writer’s premise that the said Daniel Shumate (I) did not marry their Tabitha Dodson during the period 1770-1776 as asserted by von S. Secondly, the writer believes that Daniel (I) and his first wife, Elizabeth Taliaferro had children other than those identified by von S. over the 18-20 years of their marriage and that they were mistakenly aligned by him and attributed to other than their true parents. Thirdly, the writer believes that Daniel (i) and his first wife, Elizabeth, had a son, Daniel (III) who was the one born on 14 June 1749 and whose birthday had been recorded correctly many years earlier in the records of the Daughters of the American Revolution by a Shumate descendent prior to von S writing his book, The Shumate Family in 1964.
Here, Riley goes on to document what can be known about Daniel and Mary (Hoffman) as they go to Prince William County, Va and virtually disappear. There may be a will somewhere, but nobody seems to have found it yet. When everything’s finally digitized, we may have a more accurate view of the family. He finally opines that all of the known children were very likely Elizabeth’s rather than Mary’s – but he does this over at least a dozen pages’ worth of discussion, documentation, and commentary on von S’s research (both to verify and to correct.)
By the way, I have seen claims on Ancestry that assert that James H Shumate himself was the son of a Samuel Shumate, but the poster offered no documentation – probably because there isn’t any, since it ain’t so.

1830: Fauquier County i5/162
- William Shumate 1m-5 1m3 0-39 1f 20-29
- Thomas Shumate Jr. 1m 80-89 These are toward top of page) (1841-1850)
- Lewis Shumate 1m 50-59 1 f –5 1 f20-29 1f 30-39 toward bottom (b.1771- 1780)
- George Shumate 1m 50-59 (two doors down from Lewis) – James is 30-39 by this time. (geo b. 1770-1780)
So Lewis is the son of Daniel (III) and Tabitha Dodson, and the brother of Charlotte Shumate who marries Peter Conway. In 1810, it appears that they are all living very close to one another, this George, and Jane Shumate Conway Shumate’s people. And Thomas and George are next door to each other, and in the same cluster of 27 names on the page. I am drawn to find out what these relationships mean: And this is what I found – fishing in census and Riley’s book – concerning James H Shumate and Joseph Shumate (IV)
Daniel Shumate (I) Thomas (II) George (II) Joseph (IV) and, I believe, our James.
Reading Riley’s Shumate Tome and remembering that the Saline History stated that James was born in Fauquier County, Virginia and his father’s name was George (and that Jane’s father’s name was Peter Conway):
The only George who fits the bill for James’ father is the one referred to as George (II), who is thought to be the son of Thomas Shumate II. This George is the right age. And he is found with Thomas Shumate in the 1810 and 1830 census (1800 and 1820 are the accursed alphabetized census that gives you no sense of proximity at all). In 1810, the 27 name page (anc image 21) includes Peter Conway jr., then, down a bit, George Shumate who is 26-44 and Thomas Shumate next door who is over 45. Down another 3 doors is Taliafero Shumate, who is over 45. on the page before this one is the page following:
1810: Fauquier: i20/86
Joseph Shumate 1 m 10-15 1m 16-25 1m 26-44 1f 26-44 Moreheads (fam of Joseph IV’s wife) and Dearing both on i5/86 in that County, 1810. This Joseph is not Joseph IV who is under ten at this point. (The numbers do not mean “jr” or “Sn”. These are number assigned – maybe by Von Stauffenburg and used again by Riley to avoid confusion?) I wonder who this is, because I’m seeing him all over Fauquier in these census. He isn’t Joseph Jr.’s father, either, if Riley and Von S are correct.
My interest in Joseph (IV) is that, according to both Von S and Riley, he is the son of George (II.) I am leaning on them, because I don’t have the docs in front of me the way they did.
Here’s the thing: I have been wrestling with the complex and confusing information in Riley’s book, which is generally considered the bible of Virginia Shumate research. He was the one who was outraged when I posted, maybe thirty years ago, my family with George Shumate (Summitt) of Nicholas County, Kentucky, and Rosannah Graham, his wife, as the parents of my James Shumate. His tone was imperious and objectionable, and I felt like the researcher I had drawn from was probably doing her job, so I ignored him.
But I have taken these people up again – that’s what I get for showing off for Ginna – and as I have collected the information that follows, the whole parents-of-James thing started bothering me again. In the last three days, I’ve been pushing that aspect of the research hard, and screwed up my determination to comb through the Riley book to find out the truth.
I am starting with a county history, published a year or so after the death of James Shumate in Saline, Missouri – in which the statement was made that James’ father’s name was George, and Jane’s was Peter Conway. So I have gone through all the early census, found the proximities, and found a very clear indication in the 1810 census of Fauquier County when I saw a George and Thomas (strong in the naming pattern) living ten doors down from Peter Conway. I went to Riley to find out which George this probably was, and George (II) is the ONLY George that is the right age in the right place.
Riley does not include a James in the list of George’s descendants. But there is a will, and it seems that most of his children were out of the state before he died, so the list will not necessarily be complete. What’s more, Riley and Von S both assumed that Joseph was George’s oldest son. James is older, and was way gone before 1830, so he does not show up in the records, aside from his marriage to Jane.
What really seals the deal is this: in the past few weeks, I was irritated because Ancestry searches kept serving up this Jane Shumate, wife of a Joseph Shumate in Round Grove, Marion County, Missouri. My work has been mostly in Lews, Clark, Saline and in Cherokee, Kansas, and I had my hands full of that, so when Joseph kept coming up, I ignored him.
Today, I was reading Riley’s list of George (II)’s kids, and the name Joseph popped right out. Especially when I found his marriage to JANE Morehead. And when I read, “We have no list of his descendants, and we do not know where he went after 1830.” And that’s when I knew for certain that we were looking at family, a thing that had been poking me at the edges for a week. So I pumped the census in Fauquier and in Missouri, and yes – the Joseph Shumate in Missouri, in Marion County – which is cheek-by-jowl with Lewis County – seems very clearly to be the son of George II. John Morehead, who is in his seventies, born in VA, and who was granted land in Marion County in 1838, seems a shoe-in as John Morehead, the father of Jane Morehead – and is living next door to Joseph and Jane in 1840 in Missouri.
George II lived in close proximity with Peter Conway, Jane Shumate Conway’s father and other members of her family. Joseph Shumate married Jane Morehead 21 Dec 1821 in Fauquier County and James married Jane Conway 25 Dec. 1821 in Fauquier County. As a matter of fact, a daughter of George II also was married at Christmas, in 1823. Which is, undeniably, a pattern. These two men, Joseph and James, both from the same small area of Virginia, both connected to the Peter Conways, end up living half-way across the country, virtually within shouting distance of each other in Missouri, and the names of their children share a pattern, including the name “George,” who was Joseph’s father, and “Thomas,” who was George’s father.
1820: alphabetized. NOT Joseph (IV)
- Joseph Shumate: 1m 26-44 1 45+ 1f 45+ right next to Thomas Shumate – but again, it’s alphabetized.
- Thomas is 1 26-26 1 45+ and 1f-10 1 26-44
1830:
- i3/162 (double pages) Joseph Shumate: 1m10-14 1m 50-59 1f 70-79 next to Lydia George, if that means anything. (Again, this is not Joseph IV – way too old) – so who IS he? Lydia George is dtr of Daniel III and Tabitha Dodson.
- i5/162, which is the next name page, upon which we have already found William Shumate, Thomas Shumate jun or Sr? Can’t tell. Lewis Shumate (looks like Sever) Benjamin George, Joseph George, George Shumate.
(pg.140 Riley: Daniel Shumate (III): will – Tabitha Dodson Shumate adminx with Thomas Conway and Joseph George security “for our father.” Joseph George married Lydia Shumate, dtr of the dec.)
i145/162: Joseph Shumate 2m-5 1m 5-9 1m 20-29 (b. 1801-1810) 1f –5 1f 10-14 1f 20-29 – Okay, THIS is Joseph (IV) – or at least, it’s reasonable to assume so on the basis of age. James H. also married in December of 1821, too late to show up as head of household for the 1820 census, and is in Knox, Ohio by 1830 when Joseph shows up in Fauquier.

Wow! Wow! What a tangled web! Yes, David and Sarah Ann were siblings. David born 2 Sept. 1825 and Sarah Ann born 29 March 1828. Both born in Perry Co., PA. Their parents were John “Little John” Hunter and Sarah Yocum. He was called “Little John” as a child to distinguish from the other John Hunters, and the name stuck. David and Lydia Starr were married and divorced in Van Buren County. They were parents of five children–three boys, two girls. Lydia remarried and went on to Oklahoma and Texas and became an editor of a newspaper. Your info helps a lot! I look forward to receiving your notes! Thanks, Evelyn
1852: Iowa State census, Vernon, Van Buren County, Iowa. James Shumate. All it says is that he has 5 males and 3 females, which matches 1850 – also 1840, but that’s a different set of kids. (There are also a couple of Dodsons on those pages.) This is the place where John B. Augustus and Virginia E Shumate Augustus moved after their marriage. So, is there more Shumate family up there, I wonder? Why would this place on the way to Missouri? But the two significant connections there – and now there is a third.

In the Riley book, there is a transcription of George’s Will, in which he names James, Elijah and Jacob as sons who would inherit. But it sounds like the sons were there, then, present on the property. I believe our James was in Ohio by 1830? So maybe Riley is right, and I need to look elsewhere. There was a James Shumate who was in Kentucky early – but our James was married in Faquier in 1823, and how would he have met and married Jane if he were brought up in KY? On a trip to the grandfolks?
Excerpts from Various County Histories
Most of what we “know” about this family comes from these histories, verified by census and document research. These histories are not consistently accurate – but they give us strong hints that allow us to find people we might never have found otherwise.
The histories are written between 1881 and 1903 or so. The earliest was published two years after the death of James H Shumate himself, which suggests that the information was still fresh enough not to have been too terribly confused. Still, most of the info, I imagine, came from the grown children, and if you consider what you actually know for sure about your parents and grandparents, you can see that the details might be blurred or mis-remembered from time to time. One nice thing is that there were several of the Shumates who might have been consulted, as several of the grown sons were still living in the area.

Children of James and Jane
1. George W. Shumate:
George W. Shumate married 1 Mar 1849 in Lewis County, Missouri to Hannah Dale.
He’s listed on the civil war draft rolls, but was stricken from the roll on Jan 11, 1865 because he was over 45 years of age.

Pg 601: George W. Shumate, P.O. Cambridge. Son of James and Jane H Shumate, was born in Fauquier County, VA October 6, 1822, and moved to Knox County, Ohio, and to Marion County, Missouri in 1837; thence to Lewis County; thence to Clark county; and from Clark back again to Lewis county; in 1868 he moved to this county and went to farming and dealing in stock. On the 1st of March 1849, he married Miss Hannah Dale, of Lewis county, Missouri, and has five sons and three daughters. He is a carpenter by trade but has not worked at his trade since he has lived in Saline County.

Portrait and Biographical Record of the State of Colorado published 1899
Pg. 1340: A native of Virginia, born in 1818, George W. Shumate was five year of age when his parents moved to KENTUCKY. Some eight years later, they settled in Ohio, but after a year moved to Missouri, where he grew to manhood, married and followed carpentering and farming in Clark County, where he settled after his marriage. In 1865, he removed to St. Louis County and there made his home for two years. The remaining years of his life were passed in Saline County where he died April 12, 1897.
[This suggests that his family moved to Kentucky in 1823, then to Ohio in 1831, then to Missouri in 1832. You can’t take this as fact – but it’s interesting. And Col. Riley’s argument with James’ parentage gets a little weaker.]

George W. Shumate: Born in Virginia in 1822. Son of James and Jane (Conway) Shumate, both natives of Virginia. James, born in 1799. Paternal g father was George Shumate, and his eldest son was a soldier in W of 1812. The maternal grandfather, Peter Conway, also fought in that war. (This is the smoking gun. This book was published circa 1893, long before the little typed book I found in the FHL was put together. I’m totally excited. This info was probably supplied by the family itself. Certainly, it didn’t come from genealogists who got it from each other. George died in 1896, three years after the publish date of this book.)
James and Jane came to Mo in 1827 and settled in Warren County. Early in 1849 they came to Saline and remained there until the death of James in 1881. Four sons and two daughters: James, b VA and married Ella Baskett, now resides in Lewis, Mo, a farmer. Mary b. VA, md. David Hunter. Thomas Conway md. Miss Elizabeth Duncan and resides in Texas County, Mo. Virginia married Mr. Hunter, and resides in Kansas. John Oscar married Mrs. Evens and resides in San Francisco where he is Mayor of the city. [Not really – can’t find THAT in history. Actually (2014 note), he was listed as a farm laborer/servant in 1900. They lived for decades in Alameda County, Ca, not in San Fran].
George married in Lewis County, Mo., 1 March, 1849 – Hannah Dale, native of Kentucky. 8 kids: John Preston, b Lewis in 1849, md. Evaline Odell and resides at Greeley Colo, George W, b. 1852 md. Miss Morgan and lives in Saline, Hannah b 1855 md. Mr. Gaume and resides in Sacramento, Cal (he owns a canning factory); Mary E. b 1857, md. Mr. Kelley, a farmer residing in Saline County; Samuel G b 1859, md Miss Davidson and lives at Ft. Morgan Cal; James Oscar b. 1862 married Miss Goodman and farms Saline; David L, born in 1864, lives in Saline; Sallie, born in 1867 md. Mr. House and lives Ft. Morgan Cal, in cattle.
The children were educated in Lewis till they left there in 1868. He was educated in Ohio and Missouri, in pioneer kinds of schools, with puncheon floor and split logs for seats and a latch string hung out of the door. When he was 21 years old, he left home and worked as a carpenter for a time. Later he settled on a farm of 120 acres he left home. Then lived in Clark County. Later he moved to Saline and bought 120 acres. He raises wheat grass corn and fruit. Baptist since 19. He’s a deacon. and a Mason (40 years) and a democrat.
Among the other resources is the Find-A-Grave organization. People join, and then photograph all the headstones in a certain cemetery, or just their family, but post the pictures under the Cemetery where the stones are found. Then they, or other people who come along, add links to the grave’s page, linking to other graves, naming spouses, children, parents. Sometimes (I wish more often) they include documents, death certificates and obituaries. The problem is that this added information is almost NEVER documented, and is often patently wrong. I spent several days trying to straighten out a completely wrong but complicated set of links in one of my people’s graves just last week.
The other problem is that graves and death certs are informed by people who may not know or remember the deceased’s personal information. Even dates are sometimes engraved incorrectly. But dates are really not that germinal – as long as they remain consistent, the point is not accuracy so much as identification; we need to know if we are talking about the same person.
So when you see this source – see it as hints for further research.

Memorial includes this essay: George William Shumate was the son of James H. and Jane Conway Shumate. Born in Virginia, his parents moved their family to Ohio when George was just a small boy. He moved from Ohio to Missouri when he was about fifteen years old, living in Lewis and Clark counties. He married Miss Hannah Dale in Lewis County on March 1, 1849. They moved to Saline County, Missouri, in 1868 with their five sons and three daughters. They made their home in the Fish Creek community. Staunch Baptists, Hannah and George were among the founding members of the First Baptist Church in Marshall, Missouri. Five of their eight children moved West to Colorado and California. George died in Saline County April 12, 1896. Buried in Fish Creek Cemetery – Gilliam, Saline, County, Mo.
There are two memorials, one adds: “aged 73 yrs 6 mos 6ds”
[NOTE: Thomas Conway Shumate was in Saline in 1850, James followed and was there by census 1860. So This son came in 1868.]
So George and Hannah were married 1 Mar 1849 according to the Missouri Marriage collection.

The younger ones all from Mo. This appears to be the father of John Odell, in the household with his new wife, Eveline. Jeremiah Odell evidently made it possible for the formation of Marshall County, having contributed a huge amount of land for it (can’t remember where I read that).

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=107366945Evaline Shumate, buried in the Odell cemetery in Marshall, Saline co, Mo. Died 1873. So, to recap: she was married to John O’dell in 1860, could have begun having kids in 1861. I find one John Odell in that cemetery who died around this time, and it was thus: b. Feb 27 1837 d 18 Oct 1862. If this is the case, they probably didn’t have any children. I can’t find her in the 1870 census. But then, I can’t find ANYBODY in that census that belongs to us in Saline.
She then married John Preston Shumate late in 1869. Then she died in 1873. (they don’t give a month).
Here is a list of the grandchildren living with George in 1880, John’s father who pretty much have to be John’s:
Annie 9 gdtr (1871)
Leone 7 gdtr (1873)
John A 5 g son Mo Mo Mo (1875)
And there’s a problem, because she can’t be having children if she’s dead. But then, I can’t really make out the year on the stone – from the picture. (Why take pictures if you don’t get the detail?) So I’m wondering if that year was a best guess by the recorder, or if it was added later? The other two children fall into the time frame.
There is an Annie E. Odell married 21 Nov 1886 in Marshall, Saline, Missouri to John W. John. Dead end. Can’t find Leone. Not as Odell or Shumate. John A. shows 1874 or 75 consistently over the docs. So either this death date for Evaline is wrong, or this is the wrong Evaline. Whatever, if the children’s ages are correct in the census, they were all born after the marriage date, and they are all John’s. And he left them with his parents and ran off to California?
Of course this happens in the dark spot between 1880 and 1900.
In FS Family Tree, someone has suggested that the child of this couple is John A. Shumate. No documentation or source, of course. And in chasing this name down, I find a John A Shumate who married a Florence in Saline? and moved to Sacramento, CA at some point. There is a John A living in 1880 with George and Hannah who is said to be a grandson, but no clue as to where the parents might be. There is, in Carroll County, a marriage between an Evaline Shumate and a Robertson, 1871 – but this cannot be the same mother, if John A was born in 1874. Unless she ran off and bigamized herself. A court case, perhaps orphans’ court/a guardianship case could clear this up.

Not going to find a marriage record. There was a John A. Shumate also same age in Jackson County, Mo, son of William. He could have moved to Cambridge – as a coincidence, and then to Sacramento. Arg.
My dad had John Preston Shumate married in FS to an Ida May Smith about 1890, saying she was born 1862 in Saline, but I cannot find evidence of any such marriage at all, or any such person. K8H1 NJT. Very confusing. However, John P DID end up married to an Mrs. Ida B Dickson in California, marriage about 1899. How he got there, why he left his children, I don’t know. But I’ve restored that relationship. As I’ve chased the family down through the generations, it does seem that this John Arthur Shumate could be the son of John P, thought the date of birth and birthplace could still indicate the Jackson county John A (for whom I have not found a marriage record, either). There is, however, an Ida May Smith who married a James K P Dickson 5 Mar, 1890 in St Francois county, Missouri. That just seems far afield. Perhaps that’s what Dad found?
There is an Annie L Shumate in Saline Mo, married to an F.S. Johnson 29 April 1885. That would make her 14. Surely they weren’t still marrying that young by 1885? Can’t find more on them easily.
http://abish.byui.edu/specialCollections/westernStates/westernStatesRecordDetail.cfm?recordID=266510 Marriage between John P Shumate, living in Sacramento to Ida B. Dickson also living in Sacramento on 30 April 1900 in Washoe, Nevada. I would have to go to probates or tax records to ascertain whether this John P Shumate is the same one we are discussing here. The finding of a Colorado State Biographical collection that states that John P, brother of Samuel D Shumate and Hannah Shumate Gaume, in 1899, was living in Sacramento lends weight to the idea. And that a John Arthur Shumate moved there, evidently from Saline. And the fact that there are not a boat-load of John Shumates in that area also lends credibility.

The 1900 census that names them both in Sacramento says John P is from Colorado. Which is still interesting, but not comforting. Still, the Fayette History pg. 410 says that John Preston was living in Greeley, Weld, Colorado at the time of their publication, which was about 1893, so in effect, he had “come from” Colorado.

There are discrepancies in the census etc. and I can’t find the marriage record. But I believe this is all the same family.
It seems Louis was alive through 1915. I don’t have a lot on these guys, but I think there’s stuff to find. Louis actually, while in San Francisco, went into business with Samuel D. Shumate, as chronicalled in this Colorado history:
https://archive.org/stream/portraitbiograph00chaprich#page/1340/mode/2up (better copy by far)
That position he [Samuel D] held for 18 months, after which he worked at the carpenter’s trade for 6 months, and then formed a partnership with a brother-in-law in the sheep business. He ranged the sheep eighteen miles west of Sterling and for two years gave his entire time to the management of the business. Upon disposing of their stock, he and his brother-in-law purchased a store in Sterling, and this property they sold to advantage a few days later. They then purchased an alfalfa ranch in Weldon Valley where they engaged in the cattle business and met with success. In 1888 Mr. Shumate came to his present location, purchasing one hundred and sixty acres of land and engaging in farming and the cattle business. He has made five trips to California, and is familiar with nearly every part of that state. In 1892 he went to the coast and remained there for eleven months. In 1894 he again went west this time spending three years in Los Angeles, during which time he engaged in haying and the raising of fruits.

Louis Gaume was born on August 31, 1852 in Louisville, Stark County, Ohio.1 He was the son of Jean Baptiste Francois Xavier Jeanin-Gaume and Marie Elise Faiver. He was baptized on September 1, 1852 in St. Louis Church, Louisville, Stark County, Ohio.1 He died on December 31, 1928 in Sacramento, California, at age 76.2
He was a cattle raiser about 1880 in Weld County, Colorado. He resided in California in 1891. Portrait and Biographical Record of the State of Colorado published 1899
Pg. 1340:
Samuel D Shumate, who is engaged in a general ranching business three and one-half miles east of Fort Morgan, was born in Clark County, No, on Christmas day of 1859, a son of George W. and Hanna (Dale) Shumate, The family of which he is a member consists of the following sons and daughters: John P of Sacramento Ca; George William, a resident of Saline County MO.; Hanna J, wife of Louis Gaume of Sacramento, Cal; Mary E., who married Edward Kelley and lives in Saline County, Mo; Samuel D; James O of Saline County, David L of Excello, Macon County, that state; and Sarah M, Mrs Warren House of Saline County.
A native of Virginia, born in 1818, George W. Shumate was five year of age when his parents moved to KENTUCKY some eight years later, they settled in Ohio, bur after a year moved to Missouri, where he grew to manhood, married and followed carpentering and farming in Clark County, where he settled after his marriage. In 1865, he removed to St. Louis County and there made his home for two years. The remaining years of his life were passed in Saline County where he died April 12, 1897.
The education acquired by our subject was such as the common schools of his county afforded. In 1880 he “launched his ship on the sea of life.” In company with his cousin, he came to Colorado during that year. The old-fashioned plan of crossing the plains in a “prairie schooner” had been superseded by the modern steam cars, and few were contented to resort to the slower method of transportation. However, wishing to see the country, he and his companion preferred to drive. They arrived in Sterling July 7, 1880 and remain ther for a time. Soon after our subject entered the employment of a man who had the contract to carry the mail from Sterling to Greeley.

In 1895 and 1896, Mr. Shumate served as water commissioner of this district. He is a member of Sliver Lodge No 60 K.P. and in politics is a stanch advocate of the Populist doctrines. He is a member of the Baptist church and a contributor to religious and philanthropic projects. In Nov 1888, he married Miss Rosa Davidson, who died December 31, 1894: two children were born of that union, Beulah and Samuel (dec). The present wife, whom he married Dec 14 1897, was Mrs. Mattie McPherson Wallace, a native of ohio and a lady of intelligence and refinement.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=29828578 b. Jul. 13, 1862 La Grang,e Lewis County, Missouri, USA. d. 22 Dec. 1945 Slater, Saline County, Mo.
The Slater News Rustler:
27 Dec 1945
James O. Shumate, one of the long time and most highly regarded citizens of Slater, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hugh C. Montgomery, in Slater, Saturday, December 22, 1945, at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 8 days.
Mr. Shumate was born near LaGrange, Missouri, the son of George William and Hannah Dale Shumate, and with his parents moved to a farm near Cambridge, in Saline County, when he was but a small boy and practically his entire life had been spent as a resident of this section of the county.
He professed his faith in Christ in the Fish Creek Church at the age of 15 years, transferring his membership to the Slater church in 1910, and remaining a faithful member until his death.
He was united in marriage to Minerva Goodman, October 6, 1887, who preceded him in death in 1940. To this union two daughters were born, both of whom survive, being Mrs. H.C. Montgomery of Slater, and Mrs. Charles Yancey of Jefferson City.
For a period of thirty-three years he was employed by the Cooperative Association No. 1 in Slater, retiring from active life in 1939, and while thus employed made many friends among the farmers of the community, being widely known as “Uncle Jim”.
In addition to the daughters he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Sally House of Oakland, Calif., and Mrs. Mary Kelly of Pleasant Hill, Mo., one brother David Shoemate of Sacramento, Calif., eight grand-children and eight great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and a great many old time friends.
The funeral services, which were conducted by Dr. F.O. Criminger, were held at the Slater Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, December 23, at 2:30 o’clock and burial was made in the Slater City Cemeter

—2. Mary Ann Shumate:—
Mary Ann Shumate 45, born about 1826, marries Mr. David Hunter on 19 Feb 1871 in Saline, Missouri.
She died 29 Jan 1883 – buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
From the 1881 History of Saline County: Pg. 611:
David Hunter, P.O. Cambridge. Was born on the 2d of Sept 1825, in Perry County, Pennsylvania, where he was raised, and learned his trade, that of stone-mason. In the year 1842 he went to Iowa, and worked at his trade. Not liking Iowa, he moved to Missouri, in 1868, and settled in this county. Here he found plenty of work then concluded to try farming. On the 3d of May, 1849, he was married to Miss Lydia Starr, and had four children, three boys and one girl. He lost his first wife, and after her death he married Miss Mary A Shumate, Feb 2, 1871. This union has not been blessed with children. Mr. Hunter is yet hale and hearty, and most highly respected by the community in which he lives.
FamilySearch: Marriage in Van Buren, Iowa, United States: James Shumate and Sarah Ann Hunter. 3 September 1851. I wondered if she were David Hunter’s sister and looked for him in this county. And found him. So there is a lot of significant history in this family in that little area of Iowa.

My family info says that she was born about 1831, and that she married a “Mr. Hunter.” The family into says that she is in Kansas in 1893. So she’d be Virginia Hunter – which is NOT a common name, according to my searches.

Marriage record, Saline, MO – David Hunter 19 1886 to Virginia looks like C. Gassaway – really not clear. And over the age of consent on both parts.
Okay, I am starting to freak out a little here. I just found this:
This is a marriage record for John B. Augustus in Saline on 6 Dec 1848 – to Virginia E. Shoemak.
Then:
1850: Keosauqua, Van Buren, Iowa i2/17
fam 10
John B. Augustus 30 (b. 1820) M Physician. Very poor. Miss or Mass? (b. 1820)
Virginia 21 Va (b. 1829) Good age and origin.
Randolph 1 Missouri
A search for John B Augustus b. about 1820 (+/-5) in Mass. Yields only older heads of household in 1840.
A search through 1860 census yields nothing.
A search for those born in France yields two John Augustus in Ohio, both of wrong ages, including sons. One result in Mass with two sons 20-29. This is as close as we have gotten.
A search with the French birth in 1850 yields only one John B, the one we have noted above in Iowa, Birthplace Mass. If his father had been French, he might have had the language (as it says he did in a much later census 1930 or so) and his children might have assumed he was from France himself.
The same search in 1860 yields a J.B. Augustus in Kentucky who is not from France.
The same search limited to Missouri yields a John August in Marion in 1830 with, oddly, only 1 free white person who is a woman. And that’s it for the searches.
A search for John Baptiste Augustus (the name older research seemed to favor) yields a marriage for this name to an Eliza Dodge on 31 Jan 1837 in Massachusetts. I think this is the record that has people conflating these two men. But the entries I have seen for this person have a number of children. My John B. would have been about 17 at this time. And I suppose he could have had 8 or so children in 10 years. But the question is: where would those children be if he is in Iowa without any children, marrying a young woman in 1848, and there is only 1 small child in the household in 1850? Surely, he’d have had many young children with him, had he been a widower at 30 who had eight children in ten years??? I think that someone has taken an interesting but unjustified leap here? Unless there is family information floating around – and it would mean that all the children of the first marriage had died or were living elsewhere. Also, Mine is a physician, and he’d have had to have time for his education. There is another John B. Augustus in 1880 in Missouri- this one from France, but he is even younger than mine – though also married to a Virginia from New York (not mine).
Another person who has been linked with mine, quite erroneously, is one who was born in 1831 in France and purportedly died in KC. Missouri, married in 1854 to an Eliza Scott. This would have required MY John B to be either a bigamist or a widower. He was neither, as far as I know. He evidently died before his wife did (by over 50 years), so the Mass. Marriage seems unlikely, as does the St. Louis marriage.
Here, I think, is the source of the tradition I, myself, find erroneous: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9571270/person/-778420554/comments?pg=32768&pgpl=pid

(So, I can find nothing else on Randolph. What if he IS Virginia’s Randolph? Look at the stupid six/seven year mistake on Edger. Why couldn’t the same thing have happened to Randolph?. But then Virginia’s 1910 census says 4 pregnancies and 3 living – We can find 3. Randolph’s age COULD have been 11 – if you look at the original census – if what we see on Ancestry IS the original and not a copy.)
Edger 1 (b. 1859) This age is patently wrong, according to the aggregate of census for this person. True birth year closer to 1853; tombstone says 1852. So his actual age would have been 8.
http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mdannear/firstfam/gassaway/d39072.htm#P39072
I found on line the assertion that there were at least two other children: John Henry Gassaway (was born on 13 Aug 1861 in Sedalia, Saline Co., MO. He died on 7 Apr 1940 in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa Co., AL. He was buried in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. He was married to Martha Almedia Matkins in 1890 in , Reynolds Co., MO. Martha Almedia Matkins (28)(29) was born on 1 Jan 1866 in , Reynolds Co., MO. She died on 24 Oct 1962. She was buried in Hinesville, Liberty Co., GA. John Henry Gassaway and Martha Almedia Matkins had the following children: (list includes a Doniphan). If so, these two sons were Virginia’s and Thomas’ both.and Arthur Cromwell Gassaway (was born on 12 Feb 1866 in Cambridge, Saline Co., MO. He died in , , CA.) according to this info. But then, there is a find-a-grave entry for him. Not documented, but there nonetheless.
That this is the right family is further affirmed by the fact that Virginia’s brother, George William Shumate, lived four households away:

Here is what makes me crazy. Virginia and Thomas are busily having two more children during the ensuing years, and there is much history for this family between 1860-1900, but they DO NOT show up in any census I can find using the usual Ancestry search strings. Everybody in Virginia’s life moves from county to county every couple of decades or less – so I have no idea HOW to look for them, even for misspellings, etc. The brilliant Ancestry engine is also stymied. I found Virginia’s marriage record to John B only by a sort of mistake – searching from his end rather than hers, and found her spelled Shoemak instead of Shumate. Not surprising, but not easily anticipated either. Who KNOWS what weird transcriptions/spellings their history may be hidden under. And with no census, tracking down court records, etc, that haven’t been indexed is next to impossible. Add to that the fact that most of these people RENTED their places and you have even less paper trail to look for. So there is a 40 year span of history here I cannot fill in, except by finding out what happened to the children later. (Sound of gnashing teeth.)

What’s this all about? THIS IS NOT OUR GUY. His is 12 years younger than OUR John B. His Virginia is closer in age, but from New York. Here is why we never assume that the “John Smith” we just found has to be THE John Smith we are looking for. Here is this oddly similar pair, but they are NOT the same people. Still, I’m thinking they must be related somehow.

This is a problem. Because of Thomas D Gassaway and his “brother” designation, and the mess they made of this census record, it looks like Thomas D is the brother of Arthur. But OUR Arthur is older than this. And has a different wife. But the Kansas 1895 census has Virginia and everyone in Salamanca in 1895. So he has to be family. This is the only place I see these people. All others seem to be Lizzy and AC.
Grave of Cora Lopp, said to be wife of AC. Gassaway. Headstone simply says: Mother Cora E 1877-1937. Memorial says b. 5 Aug 1877 Mauckport, Harrison County, Indiana, USA d. 16 Jul 1937. Daughter of Capt and Mrs. Charles W Lopp. Married A.C. Gassaway. Burial at Park Cemetery Columbus, Cherokee County, Kansas. We do have people in Cherokee, but the Arthur in question here ended up in California.
As usual, there is absolutely no documentation on this memorial. I have done search after search looking for a marriage record for Cora and Arthur but I have found nothing. (Later: marriage record for Arthur C Gassaway in Kansas Marriage 1840-1935: birth 1868, marriage 11 March 1903 Oswego, Labetter Kansas. To Cora Lopp. But also shows a marriage in Kansas for this dude on 20 Dec 1899 in Columbus, Cherokee, Kansas, with Minnie Hook.. The problem is that the 1910 census says that the A.C. Gassaway and Cora, his wife, were married for 13 years by then. None of this makes sense. Their son is said to be 12 years old at that time. But how could that be if Arthur, who was marked “single” in 1900, was supposed to be married in 1903. They’d only have been married 7 years, and their child would be 6. And if the same guy was married to Minnie Hook in 1899, how could he have that 12 year old child? There have to be two men here, at least –
Arthur is LIZZI’s husband and died when living in Kern County, California, but evidently visiting home? He died in ’49 in Butler County, which is just the next county over from Carter. (See death certificate at the end of this section).

A series of communications between Joyce, who maintains the memorial, and my little self:
Greetings, A Find A Grave visitor has made a suggestion to you regarding your Find A Grave memorial for John Gassaway.
Their suggestion:
————————-
Whoever put the links on this memorial made the assumption that Cora had married Arthur Cromwell Gassaway. I have spent hours chasing down the truth of this. She married an Arthur, but not that one. So the info about John’s father is incorrect. I don’t know which Arthur it was, presumably a relative considering the time and proximity. But the links between Cora and Arthur C cost me hours of extra work, just trying to figure out the truth. He married Virginia E. Shumate, and they lived together until about 1947 or so, when he died in California. The Arthur that belongs to Cora live in Kansas, not Missouri. Thanks for the work you do.

Sorry about the Gassaway memorials and who Cora and Jack was linked with. I have taken off the link for Arthur Cromwell. I wrote to the genealogy library in Columbus and asked what they showed for Jack’s father. This is her reply:
According to John Gassaway’s obit, his parents were T. D. “Don” and Cora Lopp Gassaway. He was A. C. Gassaway’s brother.
However, I don’t buy that! The obituary Jody posted doesn’t mention the parents, but she was probably looking at the Columbus paper. I looked for something on all of them, didn’t find much but I did post the 1910 census on Cora and Thomas memorials. The 1910 census said that Arthur and Cora were married and Thomas lived with them. I found these and perhaps the marriage info isn’t for the Arthur C. and Cora you are looking for, but the 1910 census for Arthur is. I am stumped!
I knew who Jack and Daisy were from an early age, they were neighbors of ours on the farm. Their nieces both live in Columbus. I don’t know if they would know anything about Jack’s parents or not since they are from the Martin side of the family. I also remember scanning in Jack’s obituary from the Columbus paper my sister had. I have it downstairs where my desktop computer is, but it’s so cold down there, I hesitate to go down to try to find it. If it ever warms up, I will look for it.

She sends me a marriage record for Arthur C Gassaway in Kansas Marriage 1840-1935: birth 1868, marriage 11 March 1903 Oswego, Labetter Kansas. To Cora Lopp. But also shows a marriage in Kansas for this dude on 20 Dec 1899 in Columbus, Cherokee, Kansas, with Minnie Hook.
Then sends me the 1910 census.

You made me laugh. I SO know what you mean – we keep our house pretty cool in the winter – some misguided idea that living on the edge of freezing to death is good for your health, I suppose.
I can send you my notes. I haven’t posted them on my site yet – but unravelling the history of Virginia E Shumate has been a walk on the wild side. At least I KNOW I don’t have Alzheimer’s yet, or I would have been mopping my brains off the floor about twelve hours into this. What I understand is that Thomas Donaphan Shumate never married. I don’t see him with a wife in any census (that I remember – I could easily be fatally confused. As you know, he was buried under a stone that says, “Uncle Don.” But then I will tell you that I found my grandfather’s death certificate today, and they had the right name for his mother, and a completely WRONG other man as his father. Which is really, really weird.
The Cora/Arthur marriage is found in Cherokee, Kansas – and – I know you have this, but:
1910: Kansas, Cherokee, Salamanca, Dist 0039 I 1/30
Fam 3:
Geor J Runck? Head 64 wid Ohio Penn Ohio with 2 sons and 2 daughters.
Thomas D Gassaway in the household – marked “brother” 56 Single Mo KY Ky (b.1854)
Fam 4:
Arthur Gassoway Head 38 Married 1 time for 13 years Mo Ky Ky (b. 1872)
Cora wife 32 1 pregnancy 1 survives Indiana Indiana Indiana
John M son 12 South Dakota MO Indiana
The problem here starts with the census taker. There’s this Runck family that I don’t recognize (I’m not deep into the associated families of all the generations – it’s my favorite tool to work with, but I’m way off my own line at this point). And the census taker seems to be grouping Don with his family. Don is on the last line and in the field that explains his relation to head of household, it says “Brother.” Which is really confusing – you wonder if somehow he’s a brother-in-law of this dude or something. And there seems to be a family number next to his name, but it’s crossed out.
Then the family number, and the Arthur entry that is written with confidence. So if I were going to guess at this narrative, I’d say Don opened the door, and the census taker assumed he was the head of household – he being of significant age, and the census guy says, “What’s your name?” And writes the household number and Don’s name – but then Don says, “Not head of household here – ,” and the census taker has to start the thing all over.
I can’t find any marriage cert at all for Arthur (who is not paired with a C in this only entry) and Cora – but then, I haven’t looked in Kansas. Duh.
The really interesting thing to me is that Don’s stone looks just like Cora’s. Same stone. Same carver. They’ve got to be related to Don, I think. I’m betting Arthur is a nephew. There is a brother I haven’t been able to find – Randolph. There is a question about him – a slim chance that he could actually be Virginia’s first little child – a brother to Edgar Augustus. I can’t find ANY info on him by either surname. Arthur had to come from somewhere. And he’s nearly the same age as Arthur C.
But Arthur Cromwell – there’s a clear marriage record for him, pairing him with Lizzie. And they spend most of their lives in Carter, Carter, Missouri – and they both end up up, I assume still married, in Kern County, California, where I have found his death cert. She lives till about 1988.
Almost everything I’ve seen in this family has a huge, complicated back-story – and I end up realizing that it’s complicated right in the middle of thinking I’m finally finished mapping it – and have to go back and do more hours of digging to figure out what, exactly, is going amiss –
Joyce, it’s a joy to meet you. Another addict. The hunt is so fun –

Hi Kristen,
I received this from Marilyn today and what a relief! Here’s more information for you. The only thing, she says his birth date is wrong. It is as listed on his stone. I wrote back and told her that if he was 18 months old March 8, 1899, he had to have been born in 1897. I’m sure she just made a mistake when she wrote that.
Joyce
“Hi Joyce,
I ran out of time yesterday, but today I was looking for more information for you on John Gassaway. I found a divorce record, Cora Gassaway vs. A. C. Gassaway, filed here on March 8, 1899. Cora states that she and defendant were married on or about the 4th day of June 1897, in Meade County, South Dakota. That they lived together as man and wife for about 4 months, from June 1897 to November 1897, when defendant abandoned her. That a child was born as the fruits of this marriage, a boy, now about 18 months old, named John Gassaway.
So it looks like Thomas D. Gassaway was not John’s father as stated in John’s obit, but Arthur was.
John was born in South Dakota in Oct. 5, 1898, and John (age 2) and his mother were living with Cora’s parents in Salamanca Twp. in the 1900 census under the name of Lopp. (Loff) in the census. According to what you found Arthur and Cora were re-married in 1903, and in 1910 census they were living with John’s brother, Thomas Gassaway, in Salamanca township. In the 1915 census it was just T. D., Cora and John. In 1920 census Cora and John were in Galena, and Cora’s brother Walter Lopp was living with them. In 1930 Cora was back living with Don Gassaway (listed as his sister-in-law).
I have no idea why John’s obituary said his parents were T. D. “Don” and Cora Gassaway. I did not find another divorce record here in Cherokee county for A. C. and Cora Gassaway, but she was listed as “divorced” on the 1920 census.
The information is correct on findagrave, John’s parents were Arthur C. and Cora Gassaway. “
Marilyn
From Me in response:
Wow – this is GREAT stuff. Now I’ll tell you – there was a Thomas Gassaway who married my Virginia E. Shumate, and they were the parents of the Arthur whose grave you’ve got. That all checks out. And Thomas, with his first wife, had Donaphan, their first son (after two daughters) who shows up in the 1860 census, and whose full name was Thomas Donaphan Gassaway. He is the one they called “Uncle Don,” I’m pretty sure. I can’t figure out who the Arthur Gassaway who would have met somebody and married them in South Dakota IS. MY family bunch also ended up in Salamanca. After Thomas died, Virginia married her late sister’s husband, David Hunter, and they are both in the 1900 census in Salamanca, Chrokee, KS, family 46 (along with a couple of boarders, in the household of Thomas Gaassaway – who would be be T.D> or Thomas Donathan. Virginia is labeled as step mother of the head of household. So this Thomas Donathan in Salamanca is the one in that 1860 census in Clark County, Missouri. In 1850, Thomas and his first wife were living in Lewis County, Missouri, So none of this in anywhere near Cherokee. The birth year of that Salamanca Thomas is 1854 while the 1860 census suggests 1856. Could Thomas Gassaway, the father in 1860 have had a brother who might have used the same name patterns? But no. This is the right Thomas (D), because right next door is Virginia E’s youngest surviving son, Edgar and his family.
Hold the phone. They had a child with them in 1850. Name of Thomas A Gassaway and he’s 10, so obviously not Emily Craven’s child. She was 21 in that census. But Thomas was 34. Both from Kentucky. Hmmmmm. This family is so freaking weird. So far, the only Thomas in Salamanca is, then, NOT the brother of the Arthur who married Cora.
Okay 1910. We’re still in Salamanca here. But Arthur and Cora are living in the household of some Runcks (or something). Whatever the name is, it doesn’t look like “Lopp.” And this is where that really confusing mess happens. Thomas D Gassaway is either a brother of the Runck – and there’s no wife mentioned there, and as far as I know neither of his sister’s married a guy with that name – or he’s stuck on top of Arthur’s household – and is the brother of Arthur who married Cora, but he’s NOT the brother of Arthur who married Cora, because HIS brother, Arthur, is still married to Lizzie Vinyard, and they will move to California and live there for decades till they both kick the bucket. SO, I’m thinking that this census has really confused everybody. I can trace the life of Thomas “Don” through the decades from his first sight of day, and none of it adds up to this Arthur and Cora pair. ??????????????
Unless there is another Thomas D. Gassaway and he IS the brother of this Arthur, and he is the same age as the other one, who also, evidently, lived in Salamanca for a time, which is possible but – famlies with name patterns are wonderful and extremely annoying at the same time. I cannot explain this. Are there two Virginia Hunters, too? I doubt that. Too many coincidences for me to swallow at one.
Arthur who married Cora HAS to be related to these other Gassaways somehow. He is six or seven years younger than the Arthur C who married Lizzie and was Thomas Donathan’s little half brother.
And here’s the other thing: Did I tell you this already? I found my own grandfather’s death certificate in Kansas City, in the MO archives a couple of nights ago. He was James J Downey, and his mother was correctly listed as Mary Viola Brunt, but in the blank for his father, who we all know was Francis Christopher Downey – because my Daddy knew him – was filled in as CHARLES F DOWNEY. Like – WHO the freak is THAT? Well, it turns out there WAS a guy at that time with that name – but how they managed to fill in that name, when my Grandmother was the informant, I do not know.
But now it strikes me that maybe she could have made that mistake. She HATED her father in law. The Downeys were Irish Catholics, and she was – I shrug – something protestant – so James Joseph had married outside of the church. And when she’d had her two kids, her father-in-law informed her that, of course, her children were considered to be bastards by the family, as the marriage was not considered legitimate. And that was the last time my father ever was allowed to have anything to do with the Surname part of his family. So maybe she had forgotten his name. Or maybe she’d just, out of spite, subbed in somebody else. Good thing we’re doing the work now, so that I know by my father’s word, who his grandfather actually had been – or I’d be pulling my hair out like we are, trying to figure out how the devil all these people fell in place.
This is fun.

In 1910 Missouri (or somebody) reports that she has had two pregnancies, but only one living child. Flora is the living child. She is mentioned in John’s California newspaper obit as Mrs. Flora B Miller, a native of Ohio, which is not true. I must assume that they mean that she has been living there for some time. I can’t pin her down there, though. I am assuming the other child, if there was one, to have been born and died before the 1880 census.

Her name proves that her mother lived past 1835. Charlotte marries into the Duncans. The reason why the Duncans interest me especially is because I have a letter written by Willie E Duncan in 1898 to his “auntie” ET Davis or BT, I can’t remember which – but that’s either Elizabeth or Bertie, same person, Turner Davis. So below this section, I chase down the Duncans to find the letter writer.

Charles B. Duncan: https://archive.org/details/pastpresentofsal00napt This is the reader location of Past and Present of Saline County, Missouri, William Barclay Napton, 1839-1913 B.F. Bowen and Co. No longer under copyright. The text, I copy and pasted from the text file, which Archived evidently produced using OCR – and so has lots of computer mistakes in it.
CHARLES B. DUNCAN: It is always pleasant and profitable to contemplate the career of a man who has made a success of life and won the honor and respect of his fellow citizens. Such is the record of the well known farmer whose name heads this sketch.
Charles B. Duncan is a son of George W. Duncan, a prominent resident of Clay township, who was born in Logan county, Kentucky, February 5, 1834. George W. Duncan is a son of Benjamin and Sarah (Pendleton) Duncan, who were born in Culpepper and Fauquier counties, Virginia, respectively, the former’s birth occurring on December 4, 1800. On their marriage they removed to Kentucky, where they made their home until 1837, when they moved to Sheridan .county. Missouri, locating two miles north of where Glasgow now is. Their stay there was brief, as they soon moved to Howard county. Missouri, where they lived about four years.
In 1841 they came to Saline county and located on farming land in Jefferson (now Clay)township. In 1844 they moved to Lafayette county, where Mr. Duncan was engaged in the operation of a mill on Tabo creek until 1847. He had met with a fair degree of prosperity in all of his undertakings and in 1847 he disposed of his property and returned to Clay township, Saline county, where he bought a farm of over
two hundred acres. On this he remained until his death. He had been a lifelong farmer with the exception of the time when he operated the Tabo creek mill, and he enjoyed a splendid reputation because of his habits of industry and his large fund of good common sense.
Benjamin and Sarah Duncan became the parents of six children, five of whom were sons, and of these, three are living, namely; James P., of Clay township, this county; George W., father of the subject; John R., of Marshall. Mrs. Duncan died in 1883, and her husband in 1886. George W. Duncan was reared on the home farm and remained with his parents until he was twenty-one years of age, when he bought one
hundred acres of land, forty lying in section 13 and sixty in section 24. He entered actively upon the operation of this place and has prospered in his enterprise, being considered today, as he has been for many years, one of the enterprising and successful agriculturists of his community. He has added to his
original holdings from time to time until now he is the owner of one hundred and fifty acres, having sold fifty acres which he owned some time ago.
In 186 1 Mr. Duncan joined a company of militia at Arrow Rock and retained his membership about a year, purchasing his release at the end of the period. In politics he is a Democrat, but has never been an aspirant for public office. In December, 1857, George W. Duncan married Charlotte Shumate, who was born in Lewis county, Missouri, about 1839, her death occurring in 1880. She left the following children: William E., born March 14, 1858, who now resides at Slater, this state; Henry C, born July 22, i860, lives in Cambridge township, this county; James F., born January 17, 1863, lives near Marshall, this county; Charles B., born October 27, 1865, of Clay township; Leona J., born January 7, 1868, is the wife of James O. Cott, of Clay township; Lillie A., deceased; George R., born January 24, 1873, resides in the state of Idaho; Ida M., born July 20, 1875, is an invalid. In 1881 Mr. Duncan married Mary Hayes, who was born March 28, 1841, in Clay township, Saline county, Missouri, the daughter of James and Rebecca (Ford) Hayes, the former born in Tennessee and the latter in Virginia. Mr. Hayes came to Saline county with his parents in 18 16, and Rebecca Ford came to this state with a married sister.
Charles B. Duncan was born in Cambridge township. Saline county, Missouri, October 27, 1865. He was reared on the paternal homestead and secured his education in the district schools of the neighborhood. He assisted in the labors of the home farm until he had attained his majority, when, wishing to take up life’s work on his own account, he rented land of his father and was engaged in its operatic ni until 1896, when he bought eighty acres of good land in section 23. Clay township, to which he has since devoted his attention.
He has made many permanent and substantial improvements on the place, the latest of which is the beautiful and modern cottage which he erected in the summer of 1909 and which is numbered among the best farm homes of this section of the county. Mr. Duncan is progressive in his ideas and keeps his
place up to the highest possible standard of excellence. He carries on a diversified system of farming, raising all the crops common to this section of the country and in addition he also gives some attention to the raising of live stock, and in all his operations he has met with a gratifying degree of success.
On January 17, 1905, Mr. Duncan was united in marriage to Eada Haring, who was born in Clay township, this county, in April, 1879. She is the daughter of George and Sarah (Hayes) Haring, the former a native of Indiana and the latter of Clay township. Saline county, Missouri.

I’ve got some Peter Conways and I’m VERY CONFUSED especially if I go by dates. Appreciate any help. Thanks, Amanda
Britain Lewis was witness along with Peter Conway on the will of John James m. Elizabeth Wright. I think that Peter Conway was the one who married Mary James who was SISTER of John James. All the names of the children seem to match perfectly siblings of Mary James who married Peter Mack Conway.
9 viii. Mary James was born AUG 1750 in Fauquier County, Virginis, and died 27 JUL 1822. She married Peter Mack Conway 11 NOV 1769 in Fauquier County, Virginia.
The will below for a Peter Conway sounds like it could be the Peter Mack Conway that married Mary James. They named their children seemingly after parents of Mary James and some of her siblings. Also, Mary James had a SISTER Dinah James who married a James Thompson, son of William Thompson. (Anybody know who this William Thompson was and who married?)
Has a will, proved 25 Feb 1832, no wife listed, children Peter, Dinah, Anna, Elizabeth, Susanna, Marian, John; his property included “the land which I received from the division of the estate of John James.”
Now this is a record I found that has a Peter Conway, Jr. named. I’m wondering if by chance he would be the above son Peter?

Then there was the second will for a Peter Conway but I don’t know who this could be?
This one DIED before the one above?

One has a will, proved, Feb 1827, wife Charlotte, children Jane Shumate, Thomas Conway, Mary Conway, John L. Conway, Ann Conway, Wm. S. Conway, Joseph Conway, Charlotte Conway, Elizabeth Conway.

Could this Mary Conway possibly be the daughter of Peter Conway who has wife Charlotte?
John James married Elizabeth Wright.
Sarah James was sister of John James and she married Peter Hitt.
Mary James was sister of John James and she married Peter Conway.
Hannah James was sister of John James and she married Charles Hume.
In 1802 John James and Elizabeth, his wife, sold to James Thompson and Dinah, his wife, a tract of land for eighty-two pounds ten shillings. Sealed and delivered in presence of Charles Marshall, Peter Hitt, Peter Conway, Charles Hume, George Crump.
John James had sister Dinah James who married James Thompson, son of William Thompson.

The Peter Conway and Mary James line descends from a Thomas Conway that came
to Va in 1671. His line consists of several Thomas Conway’s and a Dennis
Conway that married Anne Fielding., Lazarus Conway, Etc.
My 9th great grandparents are Edwin Conway, Sr and Martha Eltonhead. My
Conway cousins and I believe these two lines are kin in England before
coming to Virginia. We are still working on the kinship in England before
they all came to Virginia. I wish I could tell you more but maybe that will
help some.
Marianne Dillow
Maybe the Peter Conway I asked about could be Peter Mack Conway who was born 14 Oct 1746 in Fauquier Co. Va, and died 11 Jan 1833 in Fauquier Co. Va. He married Mary James 15 Nov 1769 in Fauquier Co. Va. She was born Aug 1750 in Fauquier Co. Va, and died 27 Jul 1822 in Fauquier Co. Va.
This Peter Conway would be the son of Thomas Conway and Elizabeth Mauzey… this Conway line would be of the Thomas Conway line that came to Va in 1671 and is the line of the other three people I am working with to see if they are kin to my Edwin Conway, Sr and Martha Eltonhead line.

It certainly looks as if the Peter Conway who married Mary James was son of Thomas Conway and Elizabeth Waugh. And then it looks as if Peter Conway was the same one who was witness on the will of John James with BRITAIN LEWIS.
Elizabeth’s mother, Mary Waugh, named him as her grandson.
If anyone disputes this, please speak up but I think this is correct.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES – 665
JOSEPH CONWAY, farmer; P. O., Bloomfield Morrow county, Ohio; was born in Virginia, Sept. 15, 1816, and lived there until he was 11 years old; he then came, with his oldest brother, to Ohio. In about a year after reaching the State, this brother died, and he then lived with his brother-in-law, James Shumate (who married Jane Shumate Conway) James Shumate and wife Jane Shumate Conway went to Missouri(Lewis & Saline county, Mo.). When he became 16 years old, he hired out by the year, for $8 per month. At the expiration of a year, his employer raised his wages to $10 per month, by the year; but this bard work did not suit Joseph, who pined after the profession of medicine. He was too poor to attend college, though he bought some medical text books, and began to read; he taught school, and tried other sources to raise money, but his health failed him, and he became discouraged. He finally gave up the idea of ,ever being a physician, and, in bitter disappointment, took consolation in getting married to Melvina Sanford, daughter of William and Melvina (Hubbell) Sanford.
To this union were born the following children-Benson A., Melville, Eva, William O., Olin and Wesley. Benson enlisted in the well-known 96th Regt., O. V. 1. While quite sick, he was brave and spunky enough to push ahead of his regiment, and engage in the battle of Chickasaw Bayou, but the exposure and fatigue were too much for him; he took the measles, which, with other diseases, and the had cold he caught, caused his death. Melville married Phoebe Evans; Eva married Thomas Hicks; William married Elsie Jackson; Olin married Emma Thatcher; Wesley is single, and at home. All live in South Bloomfield Tp. Joseph’s father died in 1823, and his mother in 1855. His parents’ family consisted of Thomas, Jane, Marv, John L., Ann, William, Joseph, James and Charlotte. Joseph is a Republican, and was formerly a Whig; he is also a member of the M. E. Church. He owns two or three hundred acres of land, and is one of the most intelligent and influential men in the township.

Doniphan-Mott-Conway
Alexander Doniphan was said to be age 24 in 1674. He married Margaret Mott, a daughter of George Mott, who died in 1675, leaving four daughters: Margaret; Elizabeth Mott, who married John Fossaker; Ann, who married John Glendenning; and Eleanor Mott. George Mott and a brother, John, patented 15,000 acres of land in King George County, Virginia. Alexander Doniphan died September 20, 1716. Alexander and Margaret (Mott) Doniphan had three daughters, no sons; and Alexander, Mott, and Robert Doniphan carried on the name.
Alexander Doniphan married June 17, 1745, Mary Waugh, a daughter of Joseph Waugh and his wife, Mary Crosby-Mountjoy-Mauzy, a daughter of George Crosby. She married firstly, a Mr. Mountjoy, by whom she had William Mountjoy; married secondly, Mr. Mauzy, by whom she had Peter and Elizabeth Mauzy, who married firstly, John Markham and secondly Thomas Conway. Mary Crosby Mountjoy-Mauzy married thirdly Joseph Waugh, and they had a daughter, Mary Waugh; who married Alexander Doniphan of Stafford County. Alexander and Mary Waugh Doniphan had: 1. William Doniphan, born March 20, 1742; 2. Elizabeth Doniphan, who married William Smith, in 1773. She was born April 2, 1744; 3. Ann Doniphan; 4. Alexander Doniphan, born March 12, 1759; 5. Matt Doniphan, born 1752. Of this family was the famous soldier, Col. Alexander W. Doniphan, born in Mason County, Kentucky, July 9, 1803; a son of Joseph and Ann Smith Doniphan. Joseph Doniphan came to Fort Boonesboro, Kentucky from Stafford County, Virginia, and taught 17 pupils during that summer. He died in 1813. Matt Doniphan, a son of Alexander and Margaret Mott Doniphan, married ?, and had Anderson, Alexander, and other children. Anderson Doniphan married Magdalena Monkeith and died 1761 in King George County, Virginia; leaving Mary, Gerrard, Rosanna, Elizabeth, and Lucretia Doniphan.
The Conway family in Virginia was one of many descendants, represented in nearly every county, and now spread in every state of the Union. Dennis and Thomas Conway, brothers, were in Virginia as early as 1665. They had several sons from whom descended the lines represented in large numbers in Northumberland and Fauquier Counties, Virginia. Dennis Conway and his wife, Anne, had issue: John, born 1673, who married Susannah and had, among others, John Conway; who married Francinah Spann, and whose family stayed in Northumberland and were prominent during the Revolution. Thomas Conway, in 1730, settled his father’s estate (John C. Conway died in 1727), and left for Fauquier County, where about 1741, he married Elizabeth Mauzy-Markham, widow, and by her had: William, Thomas, Peter, Joseph, Henry, James, George, and Susannah Conway. With the exception of Peter, all of these sons were commissioned officers in the Revolution. Peter Conway was born October 14, 1746 and died January 11, 1833; married Mary James on November 15, 1769, who died July 27, 1822. Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Diana Allen James and born August 1750. Peter Conway was always called “Colonel,” but his name is not found in the Revolutionary records. They are John Conway, born October 16, 1770; Diana Conway, born Mary 11, 1773; Andrew Peter; Thomas; Elizabeth; Mary; and Mariam. Diana Conway became the second wife of John Kelly. By his first wife, Jane Payne Kelly, there were the following children: Fanny, John P., George P., Peter Conway, Jane P., Alex D., William T., and Elizabeth. By his second wife, Diana Conway, John Kelly had James W., Susan W., Richard, Thomas C., Spicer W., Mary Ann, and Henry W.
John Kelly lived in Westmoreland County, Virginia, moving to Fauquier County. Diana (Dinah) Conway Kelly died October 31, 1847. The Spicers were closely related to the Kellys in Virginia.
Peter Conway, the son of Col. Peter and Mary James Conway, and brother of Dinah, married Charlotte ? and died before his father, in 1827.

That position he held for 18 months, after which he worked at the carpenter’s trade for 6 months, and then formed a partnership with a brother-in-law in the sheep business. He ranged the sheep eighteen miles west of Sterling and for two years gave his entire time to the management of the business. Upon disposing of their stock, he and his brother-in-law purchased a store in Sterlin, and this property they sold to advantae a few days later. They then purchased an alfalfa ranch in Weldon Valley where they engaged in the cattle business and met with success. In 1888 Mr. Shumate came to his present location, purchasing one hundred and sixty acres of land and engaging in farming and the cattle business. He ahs made five trips to California, and is familiar with nearly every part of that state. In 1892 he went to the coast and remained there for eleven months. In 1894 he again went west this time spending three years in Los Angeles, during which time he engaged in haying and the raising of fruits.
In 1895 and 1896, Mr. Shumate served as water commissioner of this district. He is a member of Sliver Lodge No 60 K.P. and in politics is a stanch advocate of the Populist doctrines.
