Cousin Emma Latimer was the daughter of Charles E Latimer and Mary A. E. Arrington. I know this because I found their marriage record and I have a letter from her to Margaret and Charles (she was lending them money to buy a house) and from her lawyer, who was sending them a check. There is a return address on the letter and I have found that address in an ebook/city directory: http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/b-m-benjamin-morgan-palmer/us-telephone-directory-span-classsearchtermspan-classsearchtermcolle-150/page-133-us-telephone-directory-span-classsearchtermspan-classsearchtermcolle-150.shtml
Latimer Chas E r 2764 Hanover cir Main-1074-J. This address matches the return address on the letter. And the lawyer refers to her as “Miss Latimer.” By that time (1948), she (b. 1884) was 64 years old and unmarried. So I have started looking for her father’s family.
This is a summation, rather than a record of process, so I’m going to start with a FindAGrave discovery:
1835: From the Pendleton Messenger
Steven S. Lattimer married Amelia C Thompson on 26 May 1835. Originally known as Miller’s Weekly Messenger (John Miller), this publication appeared probably for the first time on Jan 16, 1807. For a while, it was the only newspaper published in the Piedmont section of South Carolina. After 1812, it was called The Pendleton Messenger. Very influential. http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/27571860?uid=3739928&uid=2&uid=4&uid=3739256&sid=21103775839431 The article including (some?) Death and Marriage notices, costs $10 to download.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JD2F-KL2 Death record of son John Thompson Lattimer records name of mother as Creslema Thompson.
In one of the sons’ death cert she is referred to as “Bettie” Thompson – but this is a conflation of the maiden name of the mother with the given name of the second wife.

1850: Ancestry, marriage, death etc record collection: 1850. Commendation – Rev S. S. Lattimore – South Western Baptist. From Baptist Advocate Marion/Perry County, Alabama Nov 18, 1850.
In 1850 there is also a Stephen Latimer in Abbeville, the Savannah River reg. He is 45 at this time, suggesting that he was b. 1895, eight years before Steven S. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=LAT&GSpartial=1&GSbyrel=all&GSst=43&GScntry=4&GSsr=761&GRid=42133304& His findAGrave. According to his headstone, he died in Abbeville 13 Jun 1880.
At this point, I was very confused. Because I was researching backwards, I knew I had found family groups with both Charles E and “Edward” S (his name is actually Edwin – but there are no Edwin Lattimers coming up in the Alabama searches) in Hale County. There seemed to be quite a bit that indicated that the families in Perry and Hale might be at least connected, but the Perry censuses were horrible to try to read, and I thought maybe we were seeing two different families. Ancestry’s transcribers interpreted the 1850 census as listing a SAM’L S Lattimore, while the Hale one was Steven S. Then I found the 1850 and 1866 Alabama STATE census:
1850: ALABAMA state census: I 8/27 Brush Creek beat Perry County.
Stephen S Latemore 2 (m-21) 1(m 22+) 1 (m 18-45) (no one over 45) (two marks that aren’t ditto) 3 (f –21) 1 (f 21+) 24 slaves 31 folks in all .
This census suggests strongly that SS lived in Perry, then in Hale.

Edward isn’t the right name, which doesn’t mean a whole lot, considering it’s the census. But the ages are just about right; I wondered why I couldn’t find the fam in 1860, until I found the Perry County listings. Turner Davis died in Greensboro in 1844, so it’s not that far away from Forkland. As you follow through the decades, it becomes evident that Steven’s first wife, Amelia, has died by 1860. In the 1870 census, he is married to Bettie A.; in the FindAGrave (not yet verified), she is named Elizabeth Anne Garrett Latimer, b 1829.
Ages line up with the FindAGrave entry – headstone.
Also In Hale, Beat 10 on 10th July 1870 There is the following listing: i 5/12 (by the way, the “i” means “image” and I am usually referring to the Ancestry presentation of the census. In other areas to Family Search digitized records. Like a page number for the record in question.)
- John S or T Latimer 25 Alabama Farmer b. 1845
- Charles E 16 AL b. about 1854
Both are sons of Steven. I need to get into the actual county records, but the census and death records work together. So they were in two households that year – their father’s and their own.

Stephen Simkins Latimer b. 12 July 1813 Abbeville District, South Carolina. (The memorial claims Greenville, Greeneville County, SC , but the stone says Abbeville) d. 30 Oct 1901, Greensboro, Hale County, Al. This memorial lists his parents as Clement Theophilis Latimer and Isabella Gaines Latimer and I have followed that up, reading in the equities and probates of Abbeville. I see no justification for the assumption that Steven S. Latimer is their son. There is a Stephen Lattimer who lives his entire life in Abbeville, and whose name shows up frequently in the documents of the time who is more likely. So far, the folks who posted this information are sticking to it, though they have not shown me any hard evidence to suggest that this parent/child relationship is valid – and also a spouse, Elizabeth Anne Garrett Latimer 1829-1911. Also siblings. I have written to the entry owner for documentation.
