Martha Ann Holbrook: Family and Daughter (Turner Davis)

These are my research notes that identify the only daughter of Turner Anderson Davis of Abbeville, South Carolina and Greene County, Alabama and his second wife, Martha Ann Holbrook. Took me decades to finally pin her down.  There will be references here to documents found on Ancestry, Family Search and other web sites and document repositories. If you don’t have memberships to some of these, but you intend to do research responsibly, you probably should join them.  All relationships here are proved through documentation unless otherwise indicated.

Please realize that hundreds of hours go into the gathering and marshaling of this information.  Please do not cut and past or download this information without permission of the researcher (me – or those others cited here).  And please make sure that you cite this source with the address you see at the top of your window – so that those who actually did the work are credited and so that, when people have questions, they can find the people who can give them intelligent and responsible answers.

This family relationship is FINALLY proved by Turner A. Davis’ probate, recorded in Greene County, Alabama in about 1842 where one line states: “Jacob Hollbrooks balance note to Martha.” Other mentions:

  • Collins Holbrook security
  • Jacob, Holbrook Green Co a/c

(okay, not really proved, but pretty well indicated. Proved expressly by Jacob’s own probate as follows.)

Note: the name Holbrook is often misspelled in Greene county – perhaps because of Jacob’s deep English accent – (Halbrooks, Allbrook – maybe spoken as ‘albook). This makes it tough to find him in a casual search.

v.JAMES HOLBROOK, b. Bet. 1815 – 1820. Notes for JAMES HOLBROOK: James choose not to marry.

viii. MALE HOLBROOK, b. Bet. 1826 – 1830, Green County, Alabama. [I have not seen another person in any census, and not in the probate papers. There was a Jesse whose name does show up in places and must be related, but he is not in the list of heirs for Jacob.]

ix.MARY DAVIS HOLBROOK, b. Abt. 1839, Green County, Alabama.[ERROR. Mary Davis was the daughter of Turner A. Davis and Martha Ann Holbrook, Jacob’s dtr. When her parents died, she lived with her grandparents. I was able to unravel this in about three days of research and I know it to be true. So the people who wrote all this were not so thorough that you should relax and assume that what they have written is true.]

ELIZABETH DOWLING HOLBROOK, b. Abt. 1845, Green County, Alabama. [Again – this is also incorrect. Elizabeth Holbrook, dtr of Jacob’s son, William, married a Dowling. There were too children of William.]

Jacob, a cabinetmaker, Is first found in Savannah records when, in 1748, he swapped land with A. Gautier. He sold land In 1753 which was granted him by the ‘President and Council of Georgia’ and died about 1785 leaving a son, Jacob and Daughter Elisabeth, as well as his wife, whose will is dated 1806, Effingham Co GA where she is Mary Elisabeth Heidt. [HOW DO THESE PEOPLE KNOW THAT “HE” IS THE SAME PERSON IN DIFFERENT PLACES? THEY NEED TO DOCUMENT THESE IDENTITIES AND VERIFY THEM. SAME NAMES DO NOT MEAN SAME PEOPLE.]

Jacob Jr. required a guardian in 1765 [documentation?], but in 1766 he was granted his father’s land in Savannah. He is found in the 1790 census in Beaufort Co., SC. [PLEASE REFER TO CAVEAT ABOVE] He [AT LEAST A JACOB] moved to Greene Co., Al in 1819 with his sons, Jacob, Burweil, and Joseph. There maybe another son, as the 1790 census contains an ‘extra” male.

The family is given as Halbrook or Halbrooks [or ALLBROOK or even Allsbrook] in most records which may indicate a Lancashire, Cheshire, or Shropshire accent.

(Please note that this is not my work)

JACOB HALBROOKS had, 1, Jacob, b.ca.1789 SC who married Elizabeth and had Jacob, James, Burwell, William, Nancy, and Martha Ann. 2, Joseph, b. 1770-80, SC, only found in 1830 census with two apparent daughters. Not afterward found. 3, Burwell, b.ca.1792, SC, had Daniel G, John, William, A. Jackson, William J., Susan, Nancy, Sarah and Stacy.

The family moved from SC to Green Co., AL about 1817. Later some moved to Oktibbah Co., MS.
