Arrington-Anthony and Arthur

For the probates and wills concerning this branch of the family.

Arthur Arrington, son of William Arrington. He was granted acres in Isle of Wight on n. side of Nottoway River bordering on Wm. Crumpler, Wm. Arrington and James Chapple for importing 2 persons in the colony 6-16-1727. (P .B. 12-134). He witnessed a deed from John Exum to Robert Johnson on 10-11-1748 in Isle of Wight. According to family tradition, the surname of his wife Mary was West. Arthur Arrington and his sons moved to the western part of Edgecombe Co. N.C. about 1760. After 1777 this section was Nash Co. The will of Arthur Arrington was dated Nash Co. 4-1-1779 but was not recorded until Aug. 1801. Issue, according to his will, and family records.

  • I. Arthur Arrington Jun. **
  • II. Benjamin Arrington – untraced
  • III. Joseph Arrington m. Martha Crafford- of whom later
  • IV. Mary Arrington ·m. Benjamin Whitehead, Nash will dated 1794 .
  • V. Elizabeth Arrington m. John Drury
  • VI. James Arrington m Miss Portis {THIS IS A FORTUNATE ERROR: without this error, I’d never have found my own people. This James Arrington married Ann Willis. It is his son who married Leah Portis. My other Arrington file deals with that end of things.}
  • VII. Ann Arrington m •. Mathew Drake, Nash will dated 1810.

Ancestry: land records: Isle of Wight (means Isle of Man in Middle and maybe Old English): Copied from original Will Book. Will of Henry Briggs, appraised by Richard Kirby, Thomas Macey, Arthur Arrington. Book 4-61 26 May 1735.  Arthur was old enough, then, to have been trusted with the appraisal. Over 21 I would guess.

1790 Census: Arthur Arrington in Nash 1 male 16+ (3m –16) 5  (the name is spelled Arranton – accent)

We also see John, Peter, William, Peter, Joseph, Joseph jr., Henry. These are names belonging to sons and grandsons of Arthur sr. James is not among them. Arthur jr. also had a Joseph.  There are only 17 pages for this county, and 16 surnames starting with A. Next page is B and includes James Battle.  Arthur Jr. evidently died before his father, 1795 or so. There were five women in that household. But if Arthur sr. was in his twenties in 1735, it seems unlikely that of his four sons, three would be under 16 at this point. So this is actually most likely to be Arthur the 3rd whose children would end up living in Greene County in the 1830s.

My research follows some descendants of Arthur (2), son of Arthur (1) above. I have excerpted the above and next list of people from —Southside Virginia Families v.2 James Bennett Boddie. This is a summation of Arthur (2)’s children, and I have included the detail for only a few of them. There are mistakes in Boddie’s book that I can see, and probably many more that I can’t. But he seems to have researched this area quite well. Remember that this list is only bits and pieces of what he wrote. And as you go through the rest of this stuff, that his researched stopped at Nash. You’ll find that I fill in the blanks with Greene County, Alabama documents. So what you read in the list isn’t the last word on these people by any means.

Some children of Arthur Arrington Jn. **

XII. Arthur Arrington, son of Arthur Arrington (2), b. 10-25-1784, d. Halifax Co. 7-3-1825. He m. 10-25-1806 Elizabeth Wright Alston, b. 12-20-1786 daughter of Col. Willis Alston of Halifax, whose will, prob. Nov. 1819, W. B. 3-646, mentions son-in-law Arthur Arrington. The will of Arthur Arrington, dated 2-20-1824, was probated Halifax Co. 1825, W. B. 4.

Children;

  • 1. Elizabeth Wright Arrington, b. 3-27-1809, m. James R. Battle. We see them in Greene.
  • 2. Mary Sandiford Arrington, b. 1-25-1812 She married Anthony, son of Joseph Arrington
  • 3. Willis Alston Arrington., b. 3-9-1814 We see him in Green. Marriage and Probate/Gdn stuff.
  • 4. Arthur Arrington, b. 3-16-1816 He goes to Greene, marries, is widowed, then MS Married –
  • 5.  John Patrick Arrington, b.  9-7-1818 – To Alabama  He’s in Greene, called Jack.
  • 6. James J. Harrison Arrington, b. 10-5-1821 moves t Greene
  • 7. Marial Louisa Arrington, b. 3-2-1824 (I think they mistranscribed Mariah – in fact, I know they did.) In Greene.  Marries there.

In 1820, Halifax, NC, Arthur has  3 males under 10: (b. between 1810-1820. In the list above, we have Willis 1814, Arthur 1816, John Patrick 1818, if the census and the dates are correct. If we are a bit off, John Patrick might be born in 20 and John could be under 10. And 1 16-25  John is born about 1810 10 in 1820, Nicholas 1805, (15 in 1820) So Nicholas could be he oldest.  But where is John? Whatever it is, there’s doubt here.  Of course, the 16-25 might be farm help. On the other hand, the census taker might simply have missed putting 1 boy 10-16.Then again, in 1810, the Arthur in Halifax has no children. He’s 16-15

->  (NC Marriage Collection – Anthony Arrington md Polly Arrington 22 Aug 1826 Halifax NC  FHL 1002774-1002775  Anthony was the son of Joseph, the son of Arthur(2). He was born (census) 1806, so he was 20 when he married Mary Arrington, who was about 14.  She was the daughter of Arthur (3), son of Arthur (2) and the sister of Arthur (4).

— I, Kristen, don’t have documents that prove this cousin relationship. This file is the transcription of my decades of notes. I am relying on researchers for whom I have had respect, boots on the ground, so to speak. The following sentence is an instance of this:

Brenda Brophy says that Anthony and Arthur (4) were first cousins (this would be the Arthur who went to Greene County) and that Anthony married Arthur’s sister, Mary.

i?  Arthur (2) in Nash/Halifax died 1825 will probated 1825

In Greene, his minor children are given guardians and their inheritance is administered there. Including Elizabeth Wright Arrington who married James Battle. I found him in the probate files. I’ll figure out which one tomorrow. So the question is, why did they come? Nicholas gets a land grant in Greene. And Anthony goes there. But who else does? What about Elizabeth Wright Alston? Does she end up there, too?

Anthony married Mary and they moved there.

Arthur Arrington, son of Arthur Arrington (2)[the book calls him 3], b. 10-25-1784, d. Halifax Co. 7-3-1825. He m. 10-25-1806 Elizabeth Wright Alston, b. 12-20-1786 daughter of Col. 1832 – Willis A. Arrington md. Ann L Hammlett 23 Aug 1832

1832-Arthur is said to be about 16 years old. (b 1816?) That’s what Boddie says.

1835 Greene – Arthur marries Elizabeth J Briggs.  He’s about 19 at the time.

1836 – Penelope Cherry’s will.  John D. Arrington is security.  Arthur Arrington witnesses.

1840:  In Greene, Arthur lives near Briggs and Nicholas.  He has a boy under five.  He, himself is between 20-30, which is right.  He should be about 24 now.

By this time, Anthony and Mary had moved to Mississippi.  I wonder why they did it?  Anthony was a physician. Anthony is about ten years older than Arthur (3), his cousin. Mary, in 1830, was 15-20, while Arthur was about 14. So she was his older sister. And Anthony was older than she.  Mariah, the youngest, is married to John C Orrick in 1842. He doesn’t live to the next census.

ANTHONY ARRINGTON:

looking for Anthony, found marriage for Willis A. Arrington to Ann L Hamlett 23 Aug 1832 Greene

I find an Anthony Arrington married to Polly Arrington 22 Aug 1826 in Halifax NC

I think what I see here is this: Arthur, son of Arthur who was son of William of Isle of Wight (which means  “isle of man” – “wight” being old English) – so for OUR research here, this Arthur will be Arthur 2 (as opposed to Boddie’s numbering) from this point on. We begin with this:

Arthur 2’s son, Joseph (Arthur 3’s brother), born in 1762 had a son, Anthony, born about 1807, according to census. Boddie has no details. Probably because Anthony did not stay in Nash.  The name, Anthony Arrington proves to be almost unique in the repeated and varied searches I have done through Family Search and Ancestry. His name appears on Greene County, Al documents that pertain to our direct line. A census search turns up only one Anthony Arrington who moves, with Arthur 4, evidently, to Clarke County, Mississippi, having become a physician, and eventually to Rusk, Texas, where there is a grave marker with his name on it and a date that agrees with all other appearances of the name.  I have not located documents in Clarke that link him to either NC or to Alabama, but then, I haven’t looked yet. He seems to have moved, along with John D and Nicholas, sons of William-Rrthur-James-James Arrington, into Greene County at some point in the late 20s.
