G Aunt Lottie’s family: Bevins, Shoemakers, Woods, Echols and others

genealogy main page

For Lottie Bivens, Great Aunt Lottie who loved well through personal hardship.

Research started in Santa Fe, June 22nd or so, 2013. But not really, because I was writing to Bryan about it in February of that year.  So Aunt Lottie, who never had any kids – this is for you.

Many Thanks to Russ Ottens, Bryan Smith and Christina Smith—all of whom are obviously as in love with connecting families as I am, and whose work is included in this overview of my great aunt’s  family.

I also dedicate this work to Eddie Doris Holland-Smith, who I believe to have been a researcher after my own heart, and who collected the information that made my Great Aunt Lottie a real person for me.

1a. Lottie Bivens: the child. How I found her.

Ancestry census search for Lottie Bivens, and could only find one result:

1910 Mo, Lawrence, Mt. Hope, 0084, i14 of 27 fam 130 (3 yrs before her marriage to Andrew Jaye Sneed)

  • Eugene Miles Head 27 M1 7 years  All Al all down
  • Ellen N wife 27 M1 7 3children 3 surviving
  • Everett A son ?
  • Louie son 3 son
  • Lottie Biven 15 niece

Samuel Miles Son 5/12

I had no idea who the Miles were, other than the note in the census that said she was their niece. That could mean daughter of the husband’s sister, or daughter of the wife’s brother or sister.
I  found a FindAGrave link for Lottie Bivens Sneed.  She was buried in the Bivens Cemetery, Jefferson, Alabama.  Located: Township 16 South Range 4 West Huntsville meridian.  This area is called a bunch of things, among them Bivens, Carrolville, Five Mile – I need an historic map of the area.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Sneed&GSfn=Andrew&GSiman=1&GScid=21647&GRid=54938341&  This is the cemetery memorial for Andrew Jay Sneed, son of Andrew Jackson Sneed, son of Seaborn Anderson Sneed of Washington County, GA.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=54938486  This is Lottie’s. The inscription reads: Lottie Bivens Sneed,  Sept 8, 1984 Nov 26, 1985 There is no extra info on this memorial – unless my contribution has resulted in the installation of links.

From Bryan Smith:  Sources from my mom’s book on the section with Lottie Bivens in it, sources listed on page 404:

2. Lottie: the Bivens Family

At this point, I started exploring the whole FindAGrave thing and the Bivens family itself, hoping to find something in the memorials that would give me a hint as to how Lottie fit into this family. There were no other Sneeds. I knew she was a Bivens (Great Aunt info), but not how she fit into the family.  Notes from that fishing trip:

Rev William A Bivens 1871-1898 (dates on headstone – too lazy to record just now. There are SO many Bivens and so little indication of which connects to whom on the stones – son of, dtr of  – ). William A married Nannie Eilzabeth Shoemaker Bivens.

There are other couples here of the same vintage, but I’m feeling like James and Mary Catherine were the stem of the cemetery family tree. I she was related to them, Lottie had to be a granddaughter, considering the timing. But of which child? One of the younger ones, considering Lottie’s birth year.

Mary Catherine Young married James Allen Bivens on Feb 23, 1854.

Also buried in Bivens Chapel Cemetery. On Robert’s Memorial, children are named.  I was most interested in Nancy Jerusha Bivens Crumly.

At this point, I found Russ Ottens. His name was on a number of related Bevins Cemetery memorials, the line that came down through James A. Bivens.  So I wrote to him and got this reply:

From: kdr@ponymoon.com
Subject: Bivens

To: rjottens@hotmail.com

Russ – you were the person who filled in info for the Bivens family memorials in Find A Grave, yes? I wanted to ask you – my Great Aunt Lottie, who married Andrew J Sneed, was buried in the cemetery in 1985, but I have no idea how she’s tied to that family.

I really, really hope you have some slender hint for me -Thanks for doing the memorials

Kristen, (June 2013)

Russ Replies:

Thanks so much for contacting me.  My wife is the great great granddaughter of Confederate veteran, James Allen Bivens.  Off the top of my head, I didn’t know anything about Lottie Bivens, but it appears that Lottie may very well have been James’ granddaughter!

 I found this on Ancestry.com:

Lottie Minette Bivens (1894 – Unknown) Found 10 Records, 7 Photos and 80,678 Family Trees.

Born in Crumly Chapel, Jefferson, Alabama, USA on 8 Sep 1894 to Will A Bivens and Nancy Elizabeth Shoemaker. Lottie Minette married Andrew Jay Sneed. She passed away in Alabama, USA.

I’m not a member of Ancestry.com, but I could pursue the links the next time I visit our public library.

Anyway, it appears Lottie’s father was Rev. William Akin Bivens (Nov. 22, 1871 – April 20, 1898).  Lottie would have been about 3 and 1/2 when he died.  Her mother would have been Nannie Elizabeth Shoemaker Bivens (my Findagrave memorial no. 15662103).

I also found that Lottie M. Bivens married Andrew Sneed on Jan. 26, 1913 (Winston Co. Marriages Vol. 4 1912-1916).

So Kristen, this is exciting news!  I’d be interested to find how you and my wife are related.  She is the great granddaughter of America Jane Bivens Bagley, the sister of Rev. William Akin Bivens.  I’m very thankful you sent me an e-mail.

I chased down the links he’d found and in the process realized that I had already, a couple of months before, started this research process and had written to Bryan Smith, who’d posted information on Ancestry that had intrigued me. I messaged him, and he’d answered me, but I’d jumped to some other line by then and never followed up on the connection.  Revisiting Bryan’s post:

 BryanF58    Feb 23 3:36 PM GMT

The information I have for Lottie was gathered by my mother when she was doing Geneology and traveling extensively in researching her work years ago. She passed away 3 years ago so and I inherited her files. I could not find anything on Lottie after a glace through them, but that does not mean I don’t have a copy of what she may have had on her, I just haven’t found it yet. So far when going over her records they have been pretty accurate in regards to the Shoemaker line, so I have no doubt she was correct on Lottie’s first and middle names.

I appreciate the info on Andrew Sneed and will add it to my notes. Sorry I can’t provide you with sources at this time, but if I come across anything I will pass it on

Hi, (this is Bryan again, later)

Found some information under the Shoemaker files my mother kept, unfortunately no sources are listed. However, I am sending this to see if your information matches my mother’s.

Quoted from (Brian’s Mom’s) files “Lottie’s mother, Nannie Elizabeth Shoemaker Bivens, died when Lottie was 5 years old (Both parents died from T.B.). She left Lottie with Ellen Viola Shoemaker to raise her. When Ellen Shoemaker and James Eugene Miles married, they took Lottie with them and raised her as their foster daughter.”

As of this time, I have no notes to show if Lottie and Andrew had children. Could you verify this for me or correct me so I can show they did have children?

I hope some of this helps.  Take Care,  Bryan Smith

Later, it came to me that, depending on the years Bryan’s mom did this on-the-ground interviewing, she actually could have gotten this info from Lottie herself, who died in 1985. The note sounds solid, as though the info came from someone with a solid, first-hand familiarity with the events and people.  At that point, I had a narrative to follow.  I already knew about Ellen V Miles from the census. Now, I could verify the fact that she had been born a Shoemaker.

From there on, it was learning one lit bit of new info at a time and verifying, which led to other bits that could be verified. I also knew that the Bivens had been connected to the Shoemaker and Miles families through Nannie Elizabeth Shoemaker. So I set out to find documentation in the census, marriage and burial records for Jefferson County. At this time, I can’t get into the probates. No time to hit the Family History Library in Salt Lake, and the indexing hasn’t been done for Jefferson County by Family Search yet. The Probates for Jefferson are HUGE, and there aren’t individual indexes in the volumes, evidently.

CAVEAT: FindAGrave is not a dependable source of fact beyond the physical inscriptions read in the photographs of the actual gravestones. I have seen information in the “memorial” part either truncated so that only some of the engraved info shows on the memorial, or mistakenly transcribed. You also have to understand that the people BURYING your ancestor may not have had solid information themselves, and their guesses or wrongly transmitted information ended up literally set in stone.  The links added that describe family relationships: parents, wives and husbands, children, are added by members of the site – and may simply have been culled from “trees” on ancestry that were not founded on any documentation. Thus, anything you find on a memorial is suspect until you contact the researcher or check out the documents yourself to make sure they are solid. I’ve seen some seriously wrong info linked into these memorials.  Researchers like Russ and Christine Davis are glad to share their sources and open to new information – meaning that they are respectable, pleasant researchers who are really fun to deal with, and who I appreciate for their tremendous efforts

It’s the same with Ancestry. Sometimes you will find someone like Bryan Smith, who has access to grass-roots family research that can supply details the documents do not. The details can still be tested against further research and proven. But many, many people on Ancestry think that “source” means simply  “where I got the information” rather than, “here is the document that is the source of true information.” My father entered a death date for someone in my family that was worse than ridiculous, considering the number of children she had after that date – but he didn’t realize he’d done it.  Now there are hundreds of “trees” on ancestry that proclaim that stupid wrong date – nobody even questioned it. They just copy from each other without even doing the math. So do NOT accept anything on Ancestry unless you see the proof.

——————————– End of James and Mary Bivens digression ———————

3.  Lottie: The Miles and a bit about the Shoemakers (This topic is kinda out of family order, but I got here because finding the Miles happened right after finding the Bivens.)

Now looking for Miles/ Biven docs:

I found a lot of jumping off points at Family Search Documents for further research. But I went to Ancestry for the documents, because you have more access to original document images there.

About James Eugene Miles and Nannie Shoemaker, his sister-in-law:

Alabama marriages 1816-1957 J.E. Miles and Ellen Shoemaker m 25 March 1903 in Jefferson Alabama.  He was b 1882 and was 21 at marriage.  She was born 1885 and was 18 at marriage. (WHOA – the information I got from census and cemetery and marriage about birth is wildly variant. I used the 1900 census and went by that, I think. The 1930 agrees with it in terms of year. Oh, and the headstone date reads this way, too – b 16 Jan 1881. That marriage doc had more than one mistake in it. Many transcriptions are, evidently, shopped out to people in non-English speaking countries. Cultural expectations of names makes the work roll along – when there aren’t any, the transcriptions can get very weird.)

 1910:

Alabama, Lawrence, Mt. Hope, 0084, i14 of 27 fam 130 (This is the ONLY time you see one of these families in Lawrence County. This is where they pick up Lottie. Ellen Shoemaker b 1885 m J.E. Miles 25 March 1903 Jefferson, Alabama she was 18.  He was 21.

(Still from Family Search record search) Ellen V Shoemaker b. Jan 1881 (1900 census dtr Alabama 116 prec 30, 39 Jefferson Ala)  Mother: Louisa A Shoemaker, also mentions Lattie Shoemaker. (This is where I go to Ancestry, so I can see the original record. The name is not LATTIE, you can see clearly that it’s LOTTIE.)

1900 census:

Ala, Jefferson prec 39 0116 pg 28 of 45 fam 482

  • Louisa A Shoemaker Apr 1847 53 Widowed 5 children 4 living  Al Al Tenn
  • Ellen V dtr b Jan 1891 19 single Alà
  • Lottie  5 years old.  b. Sept 1894 Grand daughter  (What I wrote when I first saw this: there is no differentiation on the last name – but I’ll bet the farm this is Lottie Bivens)

If there were more children born to William and Nannie, they’d have to have been born between June 1896 and before 1899, when Nannie died. I have found no unattributed graves in Bevins or Crumly.

The dates line up. The census lines up with Ellen V and her husband in 1910. And all of this proves Bryan’s mother’s research to be right on the money.

James Eugene “Bud” Miles. B. 12 Apr 1883 Jefferson County, Al, d. 22 Aug 1964, Adamsville, Jefferson, Ala.  Memorial links assert that his parents were Arren Everett Miles and Martha Ann Jenkins Miles. I have not substantiated this by document yet (Now, I’m more sure). Christina Smith has linked to Arren’s memorial also in Crumly Chapel: B. 16 Dec, 1860 Alabama, d. 16 Mar 1943 Jefferson, Al and states that Arren was the son of James Miles.  Also someone has linked to Nancy Ann Miles Wells Lovelady (cool name).  A list of Arren’s children is also here.  Again, I have not substantiated by doc.  Arren’s father is said to be James Miles, his mother, Nancy Ann Lovelady who has a memorial: 3 Dec 1835 GA d. 11 Apr. 1920 Jefferson. Inscription (no photograph): Wife of Hiram Lovelady.  There is no link for him. Also in Crumly Chapel. Christina Smith has done a tremendous amount of work here.

4. The Shoemakers: Ellen and Nannie’s family.  Their mother has her own sections. (This section is next because it was because of the Miles that I did the work that brought me to the Shoemakers. But it’s out of order, too. Actually, we’re working backward in time. Which is confusing. But it’s in the order of discovery.)

We have been poking around the same little bitty area of Jefferson County, Alabama, for decades now and perhaps the most compelling truth here is found in the name clustering. These people lived in basically the same neighborhood for decades – all of them. If I had more time, I’d do the same thing with this area that I did in Abbeville, simply keep linking people until I recognize every surname and know all the circles of family in the area. But Aunt Lottie is not my blood line, and I just can’t linger here that long.

When this happens, this name clustering over decades, the probability of our family connection guesses becomes high.  Not absolute.

It is evident from census and marriage records that the family fate ends up in Crumly Chapel and its cemetery in Forestdale, Jefferson County. So I went there to see if I could find something about Louisa.

I found a memorial for L.A. Shoemaker (hoping she was Lousia A. Shoemaker) b. Apr 27, 1842 d. Aug 29, 1906. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=shoemaker&GSiman=1&GScid=22377&GRid=64297740&

The memorial attests that her spouse was Oliver Hammil Shoemaker, who I had no doubt I would also find in this cemetery – there is one huge Shoemaker memorial stone that says, “Father and Mother.”  The memorial further claims that their children include: Nannie Elizabeth Shoemaker Bivens, Margaret Althea Shoemaker Baker (buried at Crumly Chapel), and Ellen Viola Shoemaker Miles (also buried at Crumly Chapel – with husband and children listed).

We’ve already looked at Nancy (Nannie) Elizabeth Shoemaker Bivens who married the Reverand William A. Bivens. Not much to know about either of them.  And we’ve looked at Ellen Viola and James Eugene Miles, who functioned as Lottie’s parents. So that’s two daughters down.

Census says Lousia A Shoemaker had had 5 children, but only 4 were living at that point. She had S.J. In the 1880 census, there is Rasa, who is not there in 1900, but then, she’d have been 22. The memorial doesn’t mention her. So either this is someone outside the family who didn’t know about Rasa. Or she died so young, she was forgotten. Nannie had died before the 1900 census. So Rasa must still have been alive.)

Lots here if you are a member of this line.  Just connect the dots. I wonder how many others of these surnames and families are intertwined with this bunch?  And this is a strong indication that the Margaret A we see here with James Williams Baker IS a part of the Miles/Shoemaker/Arnett/Echols/Bevins circle. Someone needs to call the library in the area and find out something about the area indicated as “Bevins” in that one census (Twnshp 17 range 4).  And on the next page, there are Vandivers.  And further down, another Baker family, another Miles family and at fam 606

In Family Tree, someone has listed a daughter, Rosa or Rose in this family. I am going to the records:

Ancestry: Alabama Deaths and Burials Index , 1881-1974 lists Lydia Rosie Lee Higgins. b. 9 Nov 1878  D. 6 Sept 1942 in Brimingham, Ala. Died at 63. She was married to M.A. Higgins.  Father’s name: Hamil Shoemaker. (This is Oliver Hammil Shoemaker) Mother’s name listed as Eliza Ann Woods (which is incorrect. Her mother is Louisa A – probably Ann. She was also called Ludie, which could sound like Lizzy and make someone think her name had been Eliza – Woods or Wood Echols.) Mother born in Alabama. FHL film 1908617.

There is a marriage (FS Al. Marriages 1816-1957) between Lydia Shoemaker and M.A. Higgins 11 April 1897 Wylam, Jefferson County, Alabama.

The memorial is titled “John Jackson Echols,” but the stone simply says “John Echols.” B.23 Nov 1804 d. 26 April 1886. Information supplied by Christina Davis. Links by whomever. Says he was born Habersham County, GA, died in Jeff. Father: John Echols 1758-1828 Mother: Nancy Murrell (1758-1828) Children: Isaac Newton Echols,(Isaac Newton – really? Intereesting.) Jesse N Echols (father of Sarah, husband of Louisa A. Wood), John W. Echols, James F. John Echols, of this record, Married 1 Oct. 1837 in Habersham, GA to Sarah Regan Echols. Children links include Theran Newton Echols, Mary Elizabeth Echols May (1845-1903), Nancy C Echols Brown (1849-1914). The question of Theron and Isaac is interesting – but Theron is the name that shows up in the census. Theran was born in 1839, so I’m not anticipating that there was another child with that middle name before him. No Isaac shows up in the census.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=64296903  Sarah Regan Echols’ memorial. B 17 Apr 1816 Newberry, South Carolina (my old stomping ground). D. 9 Jan 1883 in Jeff. Links assert that her parents were James Regan (1793-1877) and Catherine Crumley Regan (1774-1877) and that her husband was John Jackson Echols. Children links include Charles L Echols (1845-1903)

There are three John Echols listed under Jefferson County in 1840. The third, pg 6 of the census, seems to be the only fit. This one has two boys under five, a man of 30-39, which fits beautifully, and a woman of 10-29. Sarah would have been 23. So this looks good. There were some Fields on the page, but I didn’t recognize any other names.

There is an L.A. Echols in the Alabama State Census of 1866. Those state census just don’t tell you a dang thing. It’s on page 29.  I’m looking at the original now in Ancestry. It’s image 25 there, Jefferson.  Top of page: Elizabeth Shoemaker 4 males under 10, 1 under 20.  L.A. Echols is at bottom of page: 1 male 20-30 1 female under 10, one up to 20. If this is Louisa, she was born in 1842 – so she’d be over 20 at that point. And who would that male be? Still, I find no other L.A. Echols in any census – wait in 1866 in Talapaloosa there are two. But there’s no J.N. or Jesse or Louisa anywhere. And she’s gotta be there. Maybe living with the Echols?  I HATE the tick mark thing in the census.

Louisa and Jesse never show up in the federal census, and this is why:  Jesse joins the Alabama 23rd battalion in 1862. Civil war records show that he was taken prisoner – I think that very year in Mississippi. They also show that he was exchanged in June of 1863. But a later record states that he was transferred to Camp Douglass in Chicago on December 24th, 1864. That’s a hard thing; they say one in seven prisoners died there

The compiled records (which I have not seen, because I am not subscribed to “Fold”) state that he enlisted in 1862. Before the baby or after?

Found on the net. This person is trying to decide if this J.N. is Jesse N. I don’t think so. All the records seem to indicate that he was only in the 23rd.  And this nurse person was in the 18th.

Thanks for responding, Molly. I have Jesse’s father John (Jack) Echols b. 23Nov 1804, d.28 Apr 1886, and his mother Sarah (Sally) Regan, daughter of James and Catherine Regan, b.17 Apr 1816, d.9 Jan1888. Do you have anything prior?

Hi Jean, Sally Regan’s mother was a Crumly before she married James Regan about 1810. She was born about 1790 and died about 1830. James was born 9/15/1783 and died 3/10/1877.   Sandy

Me – Kristen: His family was buried in Crumly Chapel Methodist Cemetery.

There is, indeed, a J.N. Echols buried in Oak Woods Cemetery in Cook County, Il. Of the 6000 dead confederate prisoners, 4200 are named on one huge memorial in the cemetery. The graves were moved from the Chicago City Cemetery to this new location due to ground water contamination concerns. The records of the burials are closed to the public, but you can call to get what info there may be to find.

To interprit: Louisa A. Echols loses her husband to Camp Douglass after 1864. He enlisted in  the confederate army in 1862. His daughter was born in 1862. Did he leave before or after the baby was born? And poor Louisa – left with a newborn, alone. I have combed through Jefferson County, looking for her with that baby, by then eight years old, in the 1870 census and have come up utterly empty. But as you see above,  there she is in the 1880s, Sarah Jane Echols, the step daughter of Oliver H. Shoemaker, older half sister to the Shoemaker girls. Took some looking, and again, I thank Ancestry’s search engine that makes some of these oblique connections, and is right enough to move the story along. It led me to Christina Smith’s memorial in Crumly Cemetery, Jefferson, Alabama.

FYI: Annie Bell Crumly was my mother’s sister; she was born in 1896, and married John M. Greenway. She was the daughter of John Wesley Crumly and Sara Jane Echols Arnett. Don’t know who the Annie Crumly you show as married to George Taylor and dying in 1901 was, but she definitely wasn’t the daughter of John and Sara Jane. We learn from this series pf census entries that Louisa (who was 8 in 1850 and is 18 in 1860 and who is evidently known in her life as ”Ludie,”) is clearly separated from the other children in the Goode family by a surname peculiar to her: WOOD. This suggests strongly that she is a step daughter, daughter of the wife, but not the husband.   Which would make her mother’s name Wood.  But it would also indicate that this is at least a second marriage for her mother, unless Louisa was born out of wedlock, which we are not going to assume.  Looking again at the marriage records:

MARRIAGE RECORDS, Jefferson County, Alabama – Book 2, page 250 William Goode to Nancy Wood. September 14, 1844

Book 2, page 116 Thomas Wood to Nancy McClintock, 28 November 1839. By W.W, Bagley, J.P.

There are actually a couple of Wood marriages to Nancys in Jefferson around this time. So we can’t make any real conclusions yet. (But I did find information on this couple.)

6a-1: Nancy and Thomas’ two daughters. One was Louisa A Wood. The other was Francis Jane Wood.

Louisa, we have covered. Exhaustively.

The eldest daughter in William Goode’s family is Francis, b 1840 – and I thought I could find out if she was a Wood or not by looking at marriages. There’s no Fanny Goode at all. And I found these: Marriage between F.A. Wood and A.G. Bates 6 March 1860.  Fanny Wood and David McSpeeden? No date. Hunting for bears. Strange. Took place in Jefferson. But honestly, otherwise, she has vanished by 1860.

About FRANCIS WOOD:

http://www.marriott.com/hotelwebsites/us/b/bhmhv/bhmhv_pdfs/Ross%20Bridge%20History.pdf

Welcome to the Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa. Though the resort is young, opening in mid-2005, the land and heritage of the family who settled on this land gives depth to an authentic story that lives throughout the resort.

According to the 1790 census, there were 38 Ross families in the Palmetto state; among them was Elias Ross, a rice farmer in Orangeburg. Elias Ross had a number of children, including James Taylor Ross who would later move west to Alabama to settle the area in southern Jefferson County that now bears his name.

James Taylor Ross was a schoolteacher in South Carolina in the years before he married Mary Louisa Coward in 1836. In 1858, they moved west to Alabama, settling alongside the native American tribes of the region. J.T. Ross’s wife, Mary Louisa Coward, was part Cherokee Indian. She married James Taylor Ross in 1836, and they had four sons:

William Elias Ross (nicknamed “Ellis”)

Andrew Campbell Ross

John M. Ross Albert Alexander Ross (nicknamed “Alec”)

James Taylor Ross purchased more than 140 acres in 1858 in the land south of Oxmoor, near Shannon. His immigration to the state was not unusual, as about 15 percent of the people in Alabama at the time had migrated to the state from South Carolina.

J.T. Ross farmed cotton, a common crop in those times. Martha Ella Ross Dunham, J.T. Ross’s granddaughter wrote of “exploring the wild woods” of Alabama on horseback with her grandfather “look- ing for deer, wild pigs, and bees.” She remembered “climbing up on high steep places where there were no roads and looking down on valleys and hollows”.

Martha Dunham also writes of him “raising cattle”, and his love of “the country and wild life”. James Taylor Ross died in 1890, and is buried at Union Baptist Church in Lipscomb, just 8.3 miles east of the Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort.

All four of James Taylor Ross’ sons fought in the Confederate Army. William enlisted on July 15th, 1861 and was discharged in 1865. He was wounded in battle near Fort Morgan, according to his niece, Martha Dunham.

Andrew Campbell Ross, enlisted in the Calvary in April of 1861 under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. According to his daughter, Andrew Ross fought in many battles, including Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain. Despite engaging in some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, Andrew was never wounded, a feat duplicated by few.

Andrew Campbell Ross married Frances Jane Wood and they had seven children, one of which was Martha Ella Ross Dunham. Mrs. Dunham made a few notes on August 10th, 1951 about the Ross family, which form the basis for much of what is known about the Ross family once J.T. Ross moved to Alabama.

By accounts, Andrew Campbell, unlike his older brother, stayed closer to home and helped his father with the farm. Andrew came back home after the War, ran a grocery store in Jonesboro (today’s Bessemer), farmed, worked as a timber contractor for the L & N Railroad, and ran a commissary at Brock’s Gap. He was an industrious man who assessed the situation and utilized it for his benefit.

Andrew Campbell lost his first wife and remarried Laura Harrell, who is described by Mrs. Dunham as an “old maid.” Prior to remarriage, he relocated to Helena, Alabama around 1876. His second wife took care of his four children still at home, and after she died he married a third time. Mrs. Dunham describes this marriage as “unfortunate,” and Andrew Campbell died shortly after his wedding.

Message Board Post:

The Thomas Wood about whom I wrote was the son of Abner and Jane Wood. He married 28 Mar 1839, Nancy A McClintock, in Jefferson Co., AL.

Thomas and Nancy’s two daughters, Frances Jane and Louisa, are listed on the will of Thomas’ father, Abner and the probate records of the settlement of his estate. Frances Jane married Andrew Ross. Louisa married Jesse N Echols.

Thomas was deceased by 12 Sept 1844 when Nancy married her second husband, William Goode. I am descended from Nancy Florence Goode, daughter of Nancy and William. Nancy F married Andrew Michael “Mikey” Robbins. Their son, Levi C Angus Robbins was my paternal grandfather.

A profile for Abner Wood of Tennessee, the father of Thomas Wood who married Nancy McClintock who might be our Nancy Wood.

Abner Wood (Sr) was born in South Carolina in 1792. He married Jane Staggs (date unknown) called Jennie, who was born 12 May 1786 in South Carolina. Jane Staggs Mother and Father, Mr. & Mrs. William Staggs were also born in South Carolina. (1880 Alabama census)

In 1820 the Abner Wood family was living in Tennessee, where their daughter Mary Polly was born that year. (1850 Alabama census). Prior to 1830 the family moved to Alabama in Jefferson Co. where their son Elias Wood was born. According to the 1830 Alabama census, Abner Wood (Sr) had the following family members living in his household; one male between ninety and under one hundred, one male and one female between thirty and under fifty, two females between ten and under fifteen, two males between five and under ten, and two males under the age of five.

Abner and Jane Wood had the following known children:

· Daughter Martha Patsy, who married Richard W. Glover.

· Daughter Polly (Mary) who married Levi Myrick. (See marriage records attached)

· Son Thomas who married Nancy McClintock.

· Son John who married Elizabeth Davis.

· Son Elias who married Emily S. Payne and second wife Nancy Malinda Payne.

· Son Abner (Jr.) who married Rebecca Julia Ann Wedgeworth.

· Daughter Lucretia Wood who married James C. Payne.

· Son Martin L. who married Sarah Jane Odem.

· Son William who married a Jane (Unknown).

Documentation for William Wood and Lucretia Wood was taken from the “Will” of Abner Wood, Sr. and the 1850 census. According to Abner Wood, Sr.’s Will, William and Lucretia were not the son and daughter of Abner and Jane Wood, they were their grandchildren (See attached document). Lucretia and her brother William were the illegitimate children of Abner’s daughter, Martha Patsey Wood and an unknown father. Abner and Jane adopted the children and they were given the last name of Wood. Martha Patsy eventually married Richard W. Glover and Lucretia married James C. Payne.

Nancy Wood, the widow of Thomas, married William Goode, Sept 14, 1844. (Marriage Rec).

Abner Wood, Sr. died in Jefferson Co. Alabama November 5, 1860. His widow Jane Wood was living in the household of her Grandson, Abner Glover (son of her daughter Pasty Wood Glover) in 1880, at the age of 95. (1880 Jefferson Co. census). In 1880, Jane showed her independence by working at carding and spinning. She lived to be 107 years old.

There were many members of the Wood family living in Jefferson County, Alabama during the early 1800’s. Among them were James H. Wood, a merchant (probably Abner Wood, Sr’s brother), Thomas C. Wood, William Wood, and a General John Wood. In this same time period, members of the Staggs family had settled in Walker Co., Alabama, which adjoins Jefferson Co., on the Northwest. (Orphans Court Book 1858 – 1860).

Three of Abner Wood, Sr’s sons served with distinction in the Civil War. Abner Jr. enlisted as a private in Company F, 56th Alabama Cavalry Regiment in September of 1862 at Jasper, Alabama (Walker Co.). He survived the war and died in Jefferson County, Alabama, April 25, 1916. On Feb 26, 1862, James C Payne (33) and his brothers-in-law, Elias Wood (32), and John Wood (34) rode down together from their farms in the community of Robbins Crossroads, Jefferson Co., Alabama, to the Confederate recruiting station in Elyton to volunteer for the war. They all became sergeants in the Co. G, 28th Alabama Infantry Regiment and fought under Bragg in the Tennessee campaign. John was wounded at Murfreesboro and died in Rome, GA, Jan 1863. John Wood died of wounds received in battle early in 1863. (See Civil War records attached) The address of his widow, Elizabeth Wood, in June of 1863 was c/o A.J. Waldrop (a Justice of the Peace), Elyton, Alabama (Jefferson Co.). Elias received Honor Roll distinction at Murfreesboro, fought at Chickamauga, and was captured at Missionary Ridge defending Orchard Knob through the last bayonet engagement. He spent the rest of the war in the Union prison, Rock Island until he was released in May, 1865. He returned to his farm where he fathered 5 sons and 2 daughters. He died in 1915. Elias had married in 1856 the first of James Payne’s sisters, Emily E Payne (b.1836) and a child was born in 1858, William S Wood. After Emily’s death, probably in childbirth in 1858, he married Nancy Malyndia Payne (1841- 1901) in 1860 by whom all his surviving children were born. Margaret Payne, James’ youngest sister never married and lived with her older sister, Malyndia and Elias, from 1860 until her death after 1910.

“The first settlers were largely of English descent from the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia. Some of the earliest settlements and towns were Jonesboro, now called something else, and Carrollsville, Bethlehem, Greensville, and Elyton.

Jefferson County Courthouse:  Carrollsville served as the first county seat of Jefferson County from 1819 to 1821.
