Gully – Hines – Kennon and associated families

genealogy main page

I am not a methocial researcher. I’m like a hound puppy running joyfully through the world with my nose to the ground, following one exciting scent until it crosses another. So my notes are a little wild.  Use your find function to find the name you’re looking for, but be aware that the names are spelled differently from source to source, and sometimes are recorded only as initials. The heart of these notes are the probates of Lovet and Bryant Hines, who name brothers and sisters and a raft of married nephews, nieces, and grand nephews and nieces. So there are a number of ancillary surnames: Bolton, Townsend, Harkness, Thetford, Pipkin, Roberts, McRae, Parker, Broadhurst – many. The main surnames are Gully (Gulley), Hines, Kennon. Raynes P Travis and Peter Conway Shumate also enter into it.

The counties involved are Greene and Sumter Counties, Alabama, and Lenoir, Wayne and Duplin NC. Other areas are also included.  There are a couple of counties in Mississippi.

The i or I before numbers indicates the image number on the census image in Ancestry.

In this particular section of the notes, I had been coming off the Bizzells, who I credit for finding the roots of my Greene County Cherry family. By that, I mean that these Bizzells traveled with the Cherry’s as they migrated from North Carolina, and by that pairing of surnames, I could identify my Cherrys as part of the Duplin group. This gave me counties, and counties allow you records and records further prove the interlocking of families and generations. The Bizzells are not in my direct blood line, but I love them, and I wanted to make sure they were remembered.

The Gully family figures large in the county. Calvin J Gulley’s name touches all the business of the years my family lived and thrived in Greene County, Alabama. And his cousin marries my half ggg uncle (who is very real to me). So I got caught up in finding her parents and sibs, which lead to the Hines and the Kennons and a number of other families as well.

It all really exploded when I found Lovet Hines, one of the kindest and most compassionate people I’ve ever known – if you can know someone who lived over a hundred years before you were born. His will and probate were the answer to prayer – though not about my bloodline, per se, these documents say what the others typically don’t – not only noting names, but explaining who they are, where they live, how he feels about them. And thus we have twenty five pages of collected information.

This starts with George C. Cherry marrying Susan Margaret Gulley. And me trying to find out who Susan M Gulley was. So I started with the marriages, hoping to find out something:

GULLY: Greene marriages:

Mary Ann Gully to William Gletcher Kennon  3 Sep 1852  (Is this Susan’s daughter?) NO it is not.

Bryant Gully Margaret Davidson  26 July 1855

Civille Amelia M Gully to Robert Harkness 16 Sept 1858

Mary E Gully Charles C Elliot 13 May 1858 (Is this Susan’s daughter? She was married before?) No, it is NOT. This collection doesn’t have the right people in it, dang it.

Susan M Gully George C Arrington 9 Nov 1858

Nathan Henry Gulley 27 May 1845

Bryant Gully m. Eliza Rowe McAlpine 30 Oct 1844

Ezekiel S Gulley m. Margaret H Thetford 26 Dec 1853

At this point, I had no idea who any of these people were.

I don’t know if this is our boy.

There’s a grave for this name, in Kemper, Miss, but the story is of an older man b. 1799. So this is not our guy, but an older Gully, for whom he may have been named. Ours was born 1831.  No, wait – I found him.

Hines family Bible in possession of the Roberts family, in possession of Luticia Lee of Sanford, FL is the source for names and vital dates of this famiy.

Submitted by Mrs. Martha Roberts is the following:

“Willis Hines born 6 June 1769 died 18 May 1835 married Sarah (Sally) Caraway.

 Another thing:

Jane Bell 1868 Boyds, Sumter d. 22 Oct 1920 Parent: Mary Stephenson.  Bryant Hines’ close ken.

Okay in Bryant’s will she’s Mary Stephenson. But in Sumter, Mary Stevenson married Francis Y Townsend, who is close to Fredrick Townsend as I could possibly get. And Mary Townsend is included in lovet’s next of kin, a sister in Sumter. So I think this may be the same person.  16 Mar 1858. Yep – take a look at 1860. You’ve got Hines and all kinds of familiar names in that house.

The record that shows Willis Hines died by drowning is in “Wayne County Coroner’s Inquests 1790-1898” dated 25 May 1835. That isn’t a book, but a record series on microfilm I believe. I don’t have a full citation for that either. I’m pretty sure I also found that at Lenoir Community College.

A Charles W. Kenan in Sumter 1 free preson there. He’s alone, in other words. He’s between 20-29, but that doesn’t fit (b 1810-1820). Could he be Charles’ son, left home to come out here, and that’s why the famliy followed?  Could he be Howell’s son? He’s 20-29 I 77 of 154 – and get this:

On the same page, Benjamin Mason and Frederick Hines.

Here is an AHA!! –

Alabama Marriages: Howell L Kennon to Elizabeth J Henley 17 Jan Greene 1827 Her surname is actually Hendly. (How do they get these things so wrong in the clerk’s office? I see it all the time, spelling all over the place. Clerks were supposed to be able to spell) I discovered this when I was trying to do an Ancestry search of all Henly households in Greene and adjacent counties. I came up completely dry after all kinds of permutations of the search. Then I looked into the estate papers on Family Search, and on a whim, seeing no Henleys and inspired by the way public records so often mess up spelling, opened a Hendly estate file– the only one in the collection – and by George, there it was:  PROBATE FOLDER 814 Greene County AL for John T. Mary Ann Gully to William Fletcher Kennon  3 Sep 1852

I had just about given up any hope of verifying the info I’d found on Family Search concerning the parentage of Charles and Howell Kennon.  I cannot stress enough the importance of the associated names you find in probates and deeds and court cases. It was in finding Dr. Howell Kennan’s name in Charle’s probate that I had my key: I researched him, and in doing so, a link between the two men emerged. Then I could go back to the info on Family Search and deal with it.

However, the info on Family Search was a menage of submissions, and some of them just didn’t fit what I had found in my own research. It was then that I did one last Ancestry search, and opened the William and Mary volume that had come up in the vital records section. And that’s where I found the outline of this genealogy.  Understand that I don’t believe the book to be entirely accurate. I don’t know who entered the info into the bible record, but the dates do not line up with what I’m seeing in the census.  Still, all the names are there, and I can proceed to accept the Family Search connection, then over-haul  it to reflect the info I have found in Greene.

101. Elizabeth Woodson, daughter of #97 John Woodson, of Carter’s Ferry, married John Kennon, first lieutenant Light Horse Company from North Carolina. He moved thence to Sparta Ga. He had issue, 1. John Woodson Kennon, born April 22, 1780; 2. William Kennon, born Feb 2 1782. 3 Elizabeth Lewis b. May 12 1783, married David Lindsay White July 6 1809 4. Richard born Feb 22 1785, 5. Charles Lewis, Born November 7 1786, 6. Robert Lewis b. Jan 23 1789, 7. Howell Lewis born December 18 1781, married Elizabeth Hendley (Bible record).

Pg. 550

97. John Woodson (Joseph, Joseph, Joseph, John, John, John) Married Elizabetyh Hughes, daughter of Robert Hughes, who in a deed dated Jan 26, 1763 and recorded August 22, 1763 in Cumberland county, gave to son John Hughes 619 acres, The Ferry included, lying in Cumberland, bought of Bennett Goode, and in the deed names daughters Elizabeth and Judith.

Okay – here’s what happened. John moved his fam to Sparta Georgia, which is in Hancock County. Now, why Howell says he’s from NC – well, his father was. So maybe they moved down to NC at some point, too. The book doesn’t tell me when the couple married. She was evidently alive and kicking by 1763 as she was mentioned in the above will. The oldest child in the list above was born in 1780. I don’t know what that means, but we’ll have to extrapolate.

Whatever happened, both Charles and Howell (both L. initials for the middle name), show up in Putnam County, which is next door to Hancock, in 1820 as head of households.  I have also a marriage record:

1790: Granville, North Carolina

1800: Hilsborough, Wake, NC

John Kennon 41 slaves 16 people  1 m –10 3 10-15 2 16-25 1 26-44   1 f 16-25 1 26-44
